Blowing through disk space, unable to recover most of it

I've got my HDD partitioned. I didn't want it that way but the guy who set up my PC did it.
20gbs on C drive and the rest on D.
I only do processing and iTunes through C drive. Everything else including installed software is on my significantly larger D drive.

However I'm constantly getting dangerously low space warnings on my C drive.

I ended up deleting every iTunes app yesterday, went from like 10mbs of space left to around 550mbs.

And now this morning I'm back down to nearly 0.

WHERE THE FUCK DOES IT ALL GO AND HOW DO I GET IT BACK?

I don't do anything but basic internetting. Facebook, Tumblr, news sites and some forums are basically the only sites I use. Hulu and Netflix once in a while and that's it.

Obviously I torrent, but that's entirely on the D drive.

I can't fucking figure this out.

LEAVE ME ALONE, DEMON POP UP BOX!

Seriously, if I wanted to I could just throw the next gay guy I come across right up against a wall and give him an anal assault and he wouldn't complain one bit.

Pretty broad problem, there's lots of things you can do, I'll go from simplest to extreme.

1. Defrag. If you're running anything prior to windows 7, you have to setup a defrag scheduled task or do it manually.

2. Use disk cleanup utility, like the built-in one or CCleaner.

3. Download diskdetective to visually see which files and folders are taking up space on your hard drive.

4. You can simply make that particular notification disappear. Run regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer. Make a DWORD file and name it NoLowDiskSpaceChecks . Click it and make it's value 1. To put it back, change the value to 0.

5. Disable Hibernation and delete Hiberfil.sys, if the space problem is critical on your operating system drive. Hibernate stores your windows session on the hard disk so it boots up faster when you press the power button [and obviously not do a full shut down]. Open Control Panel > Power Options and make sure nothing is on hibernate. The sys file is a hidden file on the root directory of your system drive. You can show hidden files from the folder options.

6. Merge your C and D drives. If all you have on your D drive is data and/or programs you can install again, you can do this. Back up everything you got on D onto an external drive. Right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management, then right-click the graphic of the D partition and select Delete. Now right-click the graphic of the C partition and select Extend and use the maximum space available.

If that's to daunting to do yourself, you can download Partition Master to make it a little easier.

delete your temp files, firefox browsing history. you might consider moving your page file to the D drive that can use up alot of space and if your windows partition gets low on space alot that can be a big culprit.

If all else fails, take a Louisville Slugger to the processor.
