HELP: 52" projection big screen tv????

anyone have any experience with projector type big screens?

i know a guy who is giving his sony 52" away for FREE. i checked it out and he showed me that all it needs is a new screen which he says is nothing more than a $35 repair because, it has a quarter sized crack and, according to him, it's basically just plexiglass. Is that true? Also, it's been sitting in a garage for a while so I'm concerned about how the interior and the projector bulbs and stuff hold up to semi-indoor conditions? do they fade, warp or rot or anything like that?

I've never had that type of TV so I'm not sure of their nature/durability/repair issues.

what year is the tv from? the old projectors kinda suck. they distort images and colors as they wear out. you cant really view them from and angle, and the picture isnt that sharp.

im not sure about newer technology in the projector world, but it might be more of a hassel than its worth.

probably 6-7 years old at the most. it's a sony.

after a little research it looks like they are simple enough to repair, the only real expense would be the lamps.

I'm just gonna take it to a shop and have it tested.

Meh, imo you're better off getting a smaller HDTV than a giant, heavy dinosaur of a TV.

the projector bulbs

have probably seen the best of their days.

I can't prove this to you, but I seem to remember hearing that the average life of this type of TV was about 9 years.

So, you might only spend $35, but you will still have an old TV with bulbs that have seen the best of their average lifetime anyway.

What I would recommend you do is find out how much it would cost you to dispose of it if you had to get rid of it.
