Crackling CD Player

I just got my truck running again (it was sitting in my driveway for about a year and a half) and everything's cool except my CD player. When I play CDs, there's this crackling sound. I don't get it when I play the radio though, so I know it's not the speakers. Any ideas?

Thanks

The Rev

probably got some dust in the cd player. id try using some spray duster before actually taking it apart.

i guess it could also be an electrical issue, but because its only doing it when playing cd's its probably the reader on the cd player.

This is probably a good idea anyway

-but dust in a cd player usually causes tracking issues rather than crackling.

More likely IMO one of the solder joins is corroded or something (sorry Rev).

Turning any of the nobs makes no difference?

It's likely the CD isn't being held firmly in place, so the cd isn't rotating at a totally flat angle, causing slight cracking every oscillation.

Does that mean I need a new CD player?

It crackles pretty loudly, but otherwise the discs play fine. They cue up quickly and don't skip. The player played fine before I parked it, so corrosion while it sat sounds like a reasonable explanation.

Is it every CD or just some CD's? I have a couple of CD's that seem to pop my speakers even at low volume for no apparent reason. I don't know if this is the same problem you're having Rev. I just blame it on the CD's.

You could try to take it apart and wire in a mini jack input for mp3s.

I don't think the Rev is incapable of geek.

If it results in a workable stezza the job is a good un.

possibly because radio circuit pulls less current than cd player motor .

could also be extraterrestrials.

Time to join 2003, Rev!

Step 1: Rip/Download CDs

Step 2: Buy cheap mp3 player or any ipod

Step 3: Buy Car FM Transmitter, hell some of them only require a USB flash drive full of music

Step 4: Connect together, tune to least used frequency range and enjoy.

Usually the case. You can find a manual online for the head unit (stereo), which will identify the individual wires in the harness that plugs into the back of the unit. At this point (with the head unit removed), the easiest way to check for a bad ground would be to cut the ground wire and re solder it to a jumper you ground to the inner dash with a self tapping screw. You will have a fresher, shorter, and probably better ground than you did before.

Today, when I was driving along, I was playing the radio and I heard the same static I was getting. Here's the thing, tho. When I turn the volume up and down, the static stays the same. If I turn it way up, the music drowns out the static. Any ideas?

First rule of automotive electronics is if it doesn't work, check the positive lead. If it kind of doesn't work, check the ground.
