I wouldn't be worried about downloading torrents. Colleges act like they'll come after you if you do but if you keep it to just a handful of torrents a month they're not likely to catch you/care.

They are more worried about the potential lawsuits that could come of a student stockpiling and distributing torrents en masse so if you avoid seeding a shitload of stuff you should be fine.
