No internets...

i have lived without internet at my home for over a month now... at first it was nice I have been reading some good literature and spending time organizing and getting shit done, but after a while that has gotten deathly boring not having any form of entertainment. i have spent hours just reading the stupid bullshit newsletters and ads that come in the mail (i know i am pathetic), i almost considered buying national enquirer at the grocery store just to have something mindlessly entertaining to read. to make things worse i have no friends and no car, so every day i dread going home from work because it is so horribly boring.

i probably spend about an hour a day just playing the 1 player computer chess that comes pre loaded with windows, and dont get me started on mahjong! that game sucks!

i have become one of those desperate people that go to the library or a coffee shop just to shoot the shit on the internet...

my question to you guys is can anyone recommend some free video game or something i can download and can entertain myself with offline? since i use university internet it cant be anything illegally downloaded... i was thinking about trying an emulator game but i have already played through chrono trigger a bunch of times on snes emulator, unless there are other good freeware rpg games out there that i dont know about?

oh yea and the obvious advice "get internet" doesn't help because i am only living at my current apartment for another month so it doesn't make sense to pay the setup fees for that short of a time.

Check out the underdogs for an awesome collection of legal abandonware.

If you like RPG games, Ultima 7 Exult (the windows version).

Have you got Steam, Ted? If not get it, and you can have my spare copy of Portal, gratis. It's an offline game, fairly short, but fairly lulz.

I wouldn't bank on steam. There's this stupid fucking bug in it that makes it so you NEED to have connected to the internet within a certain amount of time in the past, otherwise it won't let you on.

Seriously, it start up, "you're not connected" so you click start in offline mode.

Nothing happens. Pisses me off.

Yeah, STEAM works, but like SE said, it can be flaky in what it is supposed to do at times.

If you didn't know about the bug before hand, you'd never be able to get to that 2nd step.

Having to have the 'remember password' button checked and knowing to choose Go Offline from within the Steam browser isn't something you would know to do or plan for if your internet suddenly goes out.

It's a flaw. So take that derp and stick in your herp.

Do you really type your password in every time you open Steam though? Most people have it checked.

No I've always had mine checked, and this problem occurred to me anyway when my internet was shut down for a couple weeks.

Apparently it's a common problem, or at least it was when I ran into it. I can't remember exactly why, I checked some forums about it at the time.. I think something to do with steam, or a game in steam, being the process of updating last time you were online.

But who knows, maybe they've addressed the issue since then. That was about 6 months ago.

i think you should keep going unplugged, TK. i'm proud of you. i've gone for about a month or two without logging on to the internet and i just remember going out every night. i would sit at the bar and watch sports, go to the library, go to a movie theater, go to the mall, go to the park. then i got the internet and i stopped doing all those things.

^ true dat

My internet is running out at the end of this month. I'm not gonna pay to get it back. Heading to the coffee shop for when I need the wifi is actually really pleasant.

Yeah, admittedly it is quite the catch 22, in that it requires you to be online in order set it up for offline mode. In TK's case he should be able to download whatever (legally) on his schools internet and set it up for offline though.
