Hunter Thompson Movies

Everyone knows about "Fear and Loathing" with Johnny Depp, but there was another film made in 1980 with Bill Murray as Hunter Thompson. It's a pretty funny movie, and worth a look.

Where the Buffalo Roam was a pretty fun movie, Fear and Loathing is a good film, avoid the shit out of The Rum Diary, that one is baaaaaad.

"Where The Buffalo Roam" with Bill Murray & Peter Boyle as his attorney is a better depiction of HST, imo.

By all means, "Fear & Loathing..." was a riot. I loved when Depp was trying to get Benecio del Toro to jump off that Merry-Go-Round bar they have in Circus-Circus. That is 1 weird casino...& I love casinos. Where The Buffalo Roam gets my vote for the best movie about Thompson.

"...buffalo roam" was pretty good, its been a while. "fear and loathing" is fucking amazing... i have checked into a ritzy hotel tripping face ( Ritz Carlton, Montreal) and everything about that scene is spot on!

I don't like "Fear and Loathing" so much. It's like being caught up in someone's bad trip. It gets uncomfortable to watch after awhile. There are some classic moments ("So, they pay you fuck that bear?") but the trashed hotel rooms and them freaking out just makes me cringe.

Honestly, I can't believe anyone as versed in drug use as Thompson was could go to dark places like that on a trip. I've surfed some tidal waves on shrooms in my day, and I always found my way through it without losing my shit.

I just got done watching "Gonzo" and it's a pretty interesting documentary about Hunter Thompson. The man, himself, is nothing like his portrayals in the movies. He almost seems like a stiff, to me. Like he was this great writer within the context of his times, and was always running to keep up with the image of himself that that writing gave rise to in the world. He was a reaction to the world's reaction to him, which was ultimately his undoing.

It's too bad, too, because in this day and age of Occupy Wall Street, and the Internet, and Wikileaks, and all that furiously subdividing movement against the old ruling class, he would have had a chance to really kick some ass. I mean, can you imagine that guy having a blog? He would have had more influence than he'd ever had as a reporter.
