E-readers

Anyone use one? I read a fair few books and at the moment I use a second hand shop to buy and trade in books.. actual books. heh

Now I'm thinking of getting the Kindle Paperwhite. Basically the most important thing I want to know is.. can I download pirated books and read them on it? I have a whole bunch of books on my computer but I hate reading them on the screen so I would only get it if I could move them over.. and others that I could download... for free.

I have had a kindle for about 4 years and love it. I highly recommend getting one with 3G (maybe 4G now) capability so you can get new books anywhere there is coverage. Although there is a $1 surcharge for international.
My battery still lasts for almost two weeks and since I do not have a back lit screen it's extremely easy on the eyes.

My mom had one of the old kindles and yes, you could put pirated pdf's on there.

While i generally agree, the kindles (not the fire) are a lot better than reading on a computer screen. They're not back lit, its like magnetic ink or something, so it's easier on the eyes.

I have a paperwhite, and it will display books in .mobi and .pdf formats. I have downloaded tons of books off Pilates Bay and, while I've had to convert a few from .epub to .mobi, I haven't had any real problems.

Let me know when you get it and I will give you all my Bukowski books.

I used to have 8 book cases filled with books, and all it took was moving one time to make me appreciate the Kindle. Now, all those books are at the thrift store. All but the special ones.

Eh, I'm not saying you have to be a hoarder, but I honestly cannot see myself switching. Real books just feel/smell/look right IMO.

Just got a library card today (first up: do android dream of electric sheep), and apparently you can rent books on your kindle from the library...very interesting.

and sir-ex, it seems like pretty cool technology. It's like a highly detailed, electric etch-a-sketch

I basically use my phone as my e-reader. Now that pixel density is so high [i.e. Retina displays] it doesn't feel like looking at a screen. There are no jagged pixelations on the font so it looks much more like paper now.

I used to be a book purist as well, but it's hard to top the convenience.

That magnetic display that kindles use is called e-ink.

I'm reading about the technology right now. Conceptually, just looking at its physical theory, it's not extremely complex but the path that led to being able to engineer such a thing.. it's just cool man.

I like paper for marking up, having on the bookshelf for handy reference, and, to a certain extent, I agree that hardcopy just looks/smells/tastes/feels better.

I would offer a word of caution to anyone who decides to commit to make a major switch from paper to ebooks -- be careful what you do with your files, or your books. I used to have probably a few hundred books, enough for several bookcases. I trimmed down to maybe 150-200 and still go looking for some of those copies at times. Then I dropped down to 75-100 I have currently, thinking I'd recycle the paper if I could find an ebook version.

Thought I saved them to a PDF directory ... or was it Kindle? Or Evernote, or calibre? Or did my computer eat what I saved? Or did I fail to save them entirely? A mess. I lost a lot of my collection of great literature and ideas that way.

I have a 3g kindle which, in terms of the screen technology, I would recommend for ebooks over anything like the ipad or google tablets. For straddling the fine line between classic reading experience and looking at a monitor, the no-backlight paper-screen readers are the way of the future. Free samples is cool, free classics is great even if the versions are wonky (try gutenberg.org but you've been warned), ability to shop from anywhere and get a discount off the cost of the paperback is nice.

Catch is: you buy from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, so your selection is limited by what they carry or what you can find in eformat on the net. I feel like you'll never eliminate the need for paperbound books until every scrap and strand of fiber has been scanned and lives on the internet.

Even then, I'll still keep my paper copy of the Bedford Handbook, for sentimental purposes.

I've personally never read a book more than once. I can't say the same for movies though.. neither would most others I suppose. Anyways, so I have no reason to keep books really. I do find there are times when I'm talking about books with a friend and find one they haven't read but I have.. it would be nice to have it to give to them.

I have maybe five or six books on my shelf at the moment. I will read all within the next half year or so and then trade them back in. I have a few books like Thai for Begginers that are more reference so I've had it for ages.. still havn't really learned how to write and read properly.. procrastination across the nation/

Now I'm reading Shackleton story of Endurance. Fooking great read so far.

This time though I won't be buying any new books. I've already accumulated several books from the net. Some were harder to find but I got them in the end, even if they were in pdf format. First book I will be reading on my new piece of tech is the Call of the Wild by Jack London. I'm kinda looking forward to the whole experience and will drop back in here to give my impressions at a later date..

On another note.. it would be pretty great to have bookshelves like these..

I can't go back to regular books mainly cuz my comprehension now comes from multiple sources.

I.E., if I'm picking up a new IT skill, i'm watching videos + reading articles + searching the web for supplementary content, etc. All of which I can do from one device, whether it's a laptop/tablet/smartphone.
