someone left one of ths books at my place. is it generic medieval fantasy type shit or is it worth reading? I generally don't like the genre but it seems to have sufficient hype.

It's definitely not generic. The writing is phenomenal. If you like to read, give it a shot.

The fantasy aspect of it isnt too high. Its almost a political thriller with swords.

I wouldn't say phenomenal. I have read better written fantasies. But GRRM is a great world-builder and story-teller and it makes up for a lot of the turgid prose.

I don't like all the lineage shit. I skip those details, but realise some fully geek out on it all.

The Children Differences

Character Changes

Tormund Giantsbane was not a prisoner from the attack on Castle Black in the novels. He was still with Mance Rayder's army and was captured after Stannis Baratheon attacked. Additionally, in the novels Tormund was a cheerful boastful wildling, and was on friendly terms with Jon Snow.

In the novels, Jojen Reed is not killed outside the weirwood home of the three eyed crow (raven in the books). He is extremely weak and collapses, but is carried to safety into the cave by his sister Meera Reed.

Davos Seaworth does not come with Stannis Baratheon to the Wall to fight wildlings in the books. He is sent elsewhere on a mission for Stannis during this time.

Scene Changes

In the books Jon Snow sees Dalla, Mance Rayder's wife, and Mance's son being borne right before and during the Stannis Baratheon's attack. Jon also has his sword with him when he is talking with Mance in the novels.

Mance Rayder claims that a massive horn Jon Snow sees in his command tent is the legendary Horn of Joramun. Mance considers it his final option to get away from the White Walkers. Blowing the horn supposedly will bring down the Wall. This is a last resort as the White Walkers will be able to follow the wildlings south.

When Stannis Baratheon attacks in the books, a skinchanger uses Orell's eagle to scout out Stannis's army. Melisandre uses her magic to burn the eagle out of the sky, leaving the skinchanger mad with pain. In the show this skinchanger and scene was omitted.

In the books Mance Rayder is captured in battle with the soldiers of Stannis Baratheon. He attempts in vain to rally the undisciplined wildling army. In the show Mance sees the battle is lost and surrenders to Stannis.

Bran Stark and party find the three-eyed crow (raven in the show) with the help of Coldhands in the books. Again, this mysterious character who rides an elk was omitted from the show.

The child of the forest in the show throws flaming balls to blow up the agile skeleton wights. In the books she uses a torch and the wights are the standard decaying corpses and not fighting skeletons.

The three-eyed crow (raven in the books) has several small appearance changes in the show. While he does have roots entwined with his body, he does not have a weirwood root extending out through one of his eyes and into his neck. His one eye is blood-red and his skin is covered in leaves and mushrooms, and is patchy down to the bone in some places.

Daenerys Targaryen in the books uses the Unsullied to capture her two dragons with nets and chains. Several are injured in their attempts but they are successful. In the show, Daenerys lures the dragons with meat into the catacombs and locks them up herself.

Jaime Lannister refuses to have sex with Cersei Lannister in the Kingsguard's tower in the novels. It is one place he does consider sacred and does not want to profane.

Varys is not a completely willing participant in Tyrion Lannister's rescue in the books. Jaime Lannister forces Varys to drug the jailers and guide Tyrion out of King's Landing. However, Varys's quick willingness to go along with the plan and his actions surrounding the death of Tywin Lannister suggested this arrangement was to his liking.

Tyrion Lannister is led by Varys past a ladder to Tywin Lannister's fireplace in the books. He protests against Tyrion's decision to climb, but gives him extremely detailed instructions on how to get to Tywin. In the show, Tyrion enters through the floorboards in the Hand of the King's chambers and knows the way himself.

In the books Shae does not go for a knife to defend herself from Tyrion Lannister. She pleads with Tyrion for a while but enrages Tyrion with her lies, prompting Tyrion to strangle her.

Tyrion Lannister only has one crossbow bolt in the books, shooting it above Tywin Lanniser's groin. He shoots his father after Tywin calls Tysha, Tyrion's first love and wife, a whore. In the show he shoots him twice, and the discussion they have is about their relationship as father and son. The whore Tywin mentions in the show is Shae.

In the wake of Tywin Lannister's death in the novels, Varys goes into hiding in the passages of the Red Keep at King's Landing. In the show Varys accompanies Tyrion Lannister across the Narrow Sea.

Jaime Lannister and Tyrion Lannister part in King's Landing on extremely bad terms in the books. Jaime Lannister reveals that the "whore" Tysha who Tyrion married as a young man was not actually a whore and not part of a plan of Jaime's to give Tyrion a woman. Tysha was actually in love with Tyrion. Tywin Lannister made his guards and Tyrion rape Tysha to teach Tyrion a lesson. In a rage, Tyrion claims credit for Joffrey Baratheon's death, tells Jaime of Cersei's infidelities, and gleefully torments his brother with his parting words. In the show they part on good terms.

Added or Extended Scenes

The scene where Jon Snow meets Stannis Baratheon Beyond the Wall was added to the show. The content of this scene takes place later in the books, on top of the Wall at Castle Black.
While it is mentioned in the book, the specific scene where Jon Snow burns Ygritte alone is not detailed in the novels. The show added in the specific scene with Ygritte on her own funeral pyre north of the Wall.

The scene where an elderly scholar and freed slave requests to be sold back into slavery was added into the show. However, in the books Daenerys Targaryen is given word of freed slaves wishing for slavery and permits them to go back into slavery.

The scene with Qyburn and Grandmaester Pycelle treating the Mountain was added to the show. However, the content of the scene is in the books, but spread out over several different chapters. In the books, the Mountain, after screaming for weeks, is brought to the dungeons of the Red Keep in King's Landing, where Qyburn attempts his treatment.

Cersei Lannister and Tywin Lannister do not argue about family and marrying Loras Tyrell in the books. Cersei Lannister does not tell Tywin or threaten to tell everyone about her incestuous relationship with Jaime Lannister either. In the books Tywin throws around the idea of marrying Cersei to Willas Tyrell, the eldest Tyrell brother, or Balon Greyjoy.

The meeting and fight between Brienne, Podrick Payne, Arya Stark, and The Hound does not take place in the novels. In the books, after a battle with Polliver and guardsmen at an inn, the Hound's wounds became infected and Arya Stark leaves him to die under a tree. However, the show scene where the Hound lies dying is almost identical to the one in the books.
