What is the best antivirus?

The antivirus trial that came with my computer is going to run out soon. I haven't really payed any attention to any advances or changes in the antivirus software market so I really have no clue as to what is the best option.

Be it free or paid, what is the best antivirus for a windows 8.1 PC?

Honestly I just use microsoft security essentials, malwarebytes anti-malware, and a couple chrome extensions like web of truth. It has kept my computer clean since I got it a couple years ago.

This would probably work but I like to AT LEAST have an active firewall going so i can get immediate alerts about suspsicious activity. MANY times i have been installing or downloading some stuff and the firewall pops up saying that whatever im downloading is trying to fuck with my computer. It tells me exactly what is going on, what processes are trying to run to destroy my computer, etc.

Avg, malwarebytes and Microsoft security essentials. Any paid antivirus is basically a virus itself.

Yeah that would be best if you install stuff, or download from sketch places like cnet. Web of Truth keeps me away from those sites altogether before I even get to the downloading prompts, its a pretty handy little extension.

I guess I haven't had any problems because I only download torrents(music/tv) from 1-3 hosts and most of the programs I have are either legit purchased or downloaded straight from the source(google/microsoft/etc).

Good rule of thumb these days is not to download from third party sites, and go by the age old adage "if it seems too good to be true it will fuck my shit up"

I like a paid Avast! copy.

Feature rich [vpn, ip tracing, etc] and not as obtrusive as ZoneAlarm. It does have a few annoying pop-up notifications but you can customize it so it's not so bothersome but still secure.

Like Grieves, that + Security Essentials + Chrome extensions and no problems for a while now.

I deleted avast because of the notifications. I don't need my computer shouting at me every 15 minutes about updates.
