But ya Hannibal pwns, just don't compare movies to tv shows brah, it's like when morons compare Star Wars to Star Trek, god I hate that.

I was talking about Hannibal the movie, not Silence. Silence is leagues above hannibal. I still prefer the shows portrayal to the movies.

I know I've mentioned it before but does anyone else get kind of turned off by the level of violence or am I becoming a moralfag in my old age?

I cant stand the sight of real blood and would probably puke right away if i saw something a fraction as horrible as the stuff seen on the show. But somehow knowing its fake allows my mind to completely disconnect from that sense of empathy towards the victim. That said the violence is crazy and graphic and not for anyone feint of heart in that way. I can completely understand you being turned off by that level of graphic violence.

Also it should be said that the Lecter portrayed in the series is markedly different in tone than the Lecter shown in the movies. During this series he doesnt act like the killer he is. He puts on a mask of normality and attempts to camoflouge his dark side while around people who dont know his secrets. That to me is where Mads performance really shines- he plays the version of Lecter who puts on the mask to the outside world so well its scary. It will be very interesting to watch the series evolve.

For those who dont know the shows plan is to spend the first three seasons doing original plot stuff, then they will get into re-imagining the actual books in the series. So we get to see Lecter go from the mask-wearing, trying to fit in guy, to the horrible monster that we eventually see in the movies. (ironically, he goes from wearing a mask he himself creates to wearing the iconic mask that they put on psychotic prisoners in the asylum.) Dont get me wrong, glimpes of the "real" Lecter shine through in moments during this show but if you are looking for the Hannibal who isnt afraid to be seen as an evil demon this is not what you will find. Yet. Hes not rearing his teeth yet. The subtlety of the acting in that sense is really great because Mads is a very subtle guy. I dont know how well he will do when he has to really get into evil mode. I suspect he will still be great though.

I dont see a decline in tv happening for a long time as long as such creativity can be accomplished at this rate. Everything from the prosthetics to the CG to the set-work to the cinematography is just top notch. And again it costs less than most other shows to make.

It sucks that we're still at the whim of giant corporations and nielson numbers though. As good as it is, its just as susceptible to being canceled if the network is not happy with the numbers. Just look at Community. The creative floodgates have been opened, we just need to get rid of the corporate middlemen now. Theres becoming less and less of a need for broadcasting companies and other corporate gatekeepers in general. Free the creativity, I say.
Just part of their mandate of "Bread and Circus" baby. That's how they managed to keep away from the anti-trust laws, just like the professional sports leagues. Cable kind'a fucked that in the ass, so the corporatacracy just swallowed that shit up as well. There was actually a time when one of the biggest attractions of cable/pay T.V. was that there were no commercials. Pretty hard to imagine these days, but at least it does pay for better "Circus", which is really nice since soon enough nobody will be able to afford "Bread".

The movie sucked balls and since that I've been afraid of watching the visual presentation of the guy. I didn't like him in silence of the lambs or red dragon for that matter.

Hannibal is a different character in the books..
Last book character that matched or exceeded my expectations relative to a book that I had already read was Kesey's Nurse Ratchet vs. Louise Fletcher's portrayal. I hated her so bad that even meeting her in real life I think I'd strangle her.

What's to compare? From Roddenberry's Enterprise in the 60's (before we got to the moon) to the Millennium Falcon in 13 or so years (8 years after Apollo 11). Even though Roddenberry used to be a LEO... let's see, MKUltra ended around the time that the original Star Trek was canceled, hmmm...
Now Kubrick/Clarke's 2001 in '68, that was epic.

Plaster that shit everywhere and eventually folks gets so desensitized to it that they don't even flinch when watching their neighbor's kid come home from Afghanistan missing half their arms and legs. Don't watch much vidiot box anymore but caught "Restrepo" last night. Truly fucked up. I spent the whole fucking show asking why? If ya haven't seen it check it out... and then get others to watch it and start calling your elected whores in D.C.

No moral fag Ter. They just haven't succeeded in draining the last bit of humanity out of ya... yet.

Old age... yer fuckin' funny.
