The Strategy Game Project

I dunno I don't wanna take space up in that other thread.

I'm just gonna use this to post screens of my progress.

(from yesterday)

First I succeeded in finishing a hex based terrain generator composed of some 11000 tiles representing approximately 100 000 square km of terrain.



But then I thought.. you know it would be a lot cooler if I took the information produced from my hextile generator and used it to procedurally generate a 3D mesh of the terrain. Which has been tricky because I've never generated a mesh in this way:

It worked well in terms of what it is, which is a one-to-one translation of the hex data onto a mesh surface. However it looks all wonky because it IS one to one, and the height scaling is all off.

So then I tried something different and...

WTF is this I don't even..

Drawing maps and building a world (briefly) is a lot of fun for me. I have always enjoyed maps and making up little stories for the geography I draw.

What's the desired endgame? or is this just messing around to come to grasp with what you are working with? Either way, color me interested.

Oh no this here is my own thing done in a different engine.


For you I was thinking if you needed some work done, say creating a unique battle system that isn't build into RPG maker. Or some AI stuff or anything more complicated you'd need to have a programmer do.

Why don't you just make it for yourself? I can help with story and world-building if that's not your thing. It can be a collaboration project!

You seemed pretty excited when you mentioned it - mentioning making your 'dream' rpg I think it was. I'll be starting school again pretty soon and I couldn't commit to taking on a full project right now.

Making small systems on the side to enhance what you were going for is more what I had in mind.

haha you're right though it still doesn't look realistic.

It was a bit daunting to figure out texturing. The terrain uses a jagged 3d array to store alphamap settings so it can blend textures in any given portion of the terrain.

But now that I know more what I'm doing, today I'm going to put some time into getting the mountains looking more realistic, and then something to generate a coastline + sea-level and then see about putting an ocean in.

Today so far I've improved texturing a bit and more importantly made the mountains generate to look a bit more realistic, and made rolling hills exist on the plains and forested areas.

Currently implementing something that creates a general curvature of the terrain to simulate earth curvature, then I'll put in the sea level.

End of the day, curvature, ocean, and maybe if I have time some particle generators for clouds that will move around in simple patterns derived from weather equations.
