I will watch the life escape from your eyes 1000 miles away when my robot drone murders you in the middle of the night.

With HD depth perception.

Got it up and running, also got Star Citizen ported to it.

Pretty fun so far, but buggy with SC since there's no official support for it yet.

The demos are really nice, though. Been chasing butterflies in Tuscany, lolz.

Ok, here's Komp's Terry-requested review of the Oculus Rift:

First off, i have to clarify that this is an outdated model. There is a DK3, but it not for sale, and Oculus has stated they will not be releasing prior to their consumer product, when available. My point is, do not buy this unless you intend to develop software for it, which is what i'm planning on doing.

So basically, if you're not Facebook you're stuck with the DK2. That itself isn't too bad, but the DK3 from what i hear solves a lot of the complaints that i have with the current DK2.

So, let me go through the bad first:

Even at 1080p, being so close to the display still makes the individual pixels visible, much like staring too close to a normal TV. This produces what's known as the 'screen door' effect, which as you can guess basically seems like having a screen mesh to view through. The DK3 is supposedly in 4K+, so that issue looks like it'll be fixed. After a bit of immersion though it doesn't become as noticeable, mainly in the beginning when you're adjusting between worlds, so to speak.

It's pretty fragile. Looks like i've already damaged a bit of it just by opening and configuring. Nothing critical, but definitely use extra care, especially around the display and lenses.

The field of view is narrower than a expected, but that's due to the circular lenses that can be seen from the torn apart pic a few posts above. The DK3 supposedly gets around this by having more rectangular, glasses-like lenses, as well as the higher resolutions.

Lastly, there's basically no software for it, understandably. Making this work for current games means a lot of code injection, so don't expect a plug-n-play gaming from the rift just yet. The games that are designed for it are pretty primitive, akin to video gaming in the 90's. Just have to wait for developers to see what potential golden nuggets they can sift through.

Now for the Good:

This is the first step to Star Trek's holodecks. Once going through the pain and labor of setup, it is a fantastic experience. Being able to crane your head around a virtual object is a simple act, but is a huge step towards Presence, which is Oculus speak for seamless virtual immersion.

You cannot help but smile once you've figured out how to move in another plane of existence. Mostly devs are working on building environments to walk through. I've currently explored the Millennium Falcon and Firefly ships through the Rift as my favorites. I also felt like a little kid again chasing butterflies around a Tuscany Villa.

I know the bad list looks bigger than the good, but the experience of the Oculus is pretty intangible and hard to describe.

Just like drug trip, in order to really know you'll have to do it yourself.

Here's a good keynote speech from the Chief Scientist for those interested in the physics.

by your description of what it can already do, it seems as though we are already so freaking close to my virtual reality dream of being able to fly.

If you are already running around in various landscapes n shit, it is only a few steps more till you can fly over them.

From then on, it is just better graphics and better immersion.
Cant.freaking.wait.

also komp, say on a scale of 1-10. With 10 being you can barely tell the difference between real and virtual, and 1 being akin to like sitting close to the TV...
How immersive is the rift experience with your gear?

^ Believe me, you're not the only one with that dream:

As for the second scale question, it's hard to gauge but i'd guess with the DK2 between a 7-8. With the DK3 probably pushes it up to 8-9. You'll only really notice the mesh if your actively looking for it, once you start moving and looking around naturally the movements blur it away.

But again, even though it feels like you're moving around in a real world, graphically the best that's out there is probably comparable to World of Warcraft, with not nearly as massive a playground, unless you download a specific small set someone created like the Falcon or Firefly. The first VR MMO is going to be insane, though.

Based-as-fuck Komp giving a review even though he's an admin and I'm just a fucking poster on his site.

Fucking tight review man, and I trust yours way more than PC Gamer or RPS. Thanks for giving it to us straight man, seriously.

Are they gonna have a bundle that includes a time machine so we can warp in a PC capable of running Star Citizen in 4k?

If you have a GTX 780 or better you can run 4k games.

SLI'd like i do shouldn't be a problem, and by then single GPU's will be even better.

Hello,

Just checking in to update this exciting stuff.

Gotten hands and eyes into the same virtual space, now building up a virtual Operating Room to walk around in and start testing various scenarios and case studies.

Also, I now have 3 rifts. Beginning to build its network assets to have multiple peoples' hands/eyes in the same virtual room, as well as being able to switch to someone else's POV while retaining your own hands [so you can see how someone else sees what you're doing] and vice versa [someone else taking over your virtual hands].

Plus with the release of Unity 5, comes the process of converting our Unity 4 project into the new engine.

VR MMO here i come!

We have a few videos on youtube, but they are unlisted.

Still figuring out all the Intellectual Property stuff before i really go public with it, but here's an older one we were using as a sales pitch video for funding.

Komp you must try Project Cars on your OR - I've played it a bit on PC and I can't imagine how awesome it would be with the rift!

With two custom controllers, dubbed Oculus Touch:
