The VICE channel

I assume the majority of you have read or watched stuff from VICE media in the past decade. Well A&E networks forged a deal where they're turning over H2 (history channel's spinoff network) to VICE. There's some controversy about the objectivity of vice these days since FOX, Time Warner and Rogers are all stakeholders. As far as I can tell the founders still own over 50% of the company. I personally enjoy the kind of media vice produces. I think that the vice network will be a positive and hope it doesn't become MTVillified. (With the announcement of the new network came news that they were in talks with Kanye West to create a program). There are groups that think that the involvement of fox (who only own 5%) indicates that the true purpose is to drive conservatives and liberals further apart.

I mean why cable matters is it will give them a much bigger budget, much more airtime and a much wider audience. It will also be an interesting counter choice when you're couch surfing or at your grandma's overnight. I agree most of what they do is laughable. The fact they still have that DOs and DON'Ts section on their front page is laughable considering I had a producer and a cameraman over my place in Salem one time who told me that a $100 bill could get whatever pictures I wanted in that section. Not that it wouldn't be worth it to shame certain people that publicly, but if you take a look at those pics it's pretty obvious that's what's going on. I wish they wouldn't try to get into pop culture shit but I think they also have some of the most solid reporting possible on fringe topics.

VICE sux

actual response: I've only seen one or two things produced by Vice, but I would consider it moronic to ever put my trust in anything that was even partially owned by FOX or Rogers .

Would you have known that if I hadn't mentioned it? Shane Smith states that the producers still have absolute control of the content. The handful of vice employees I've met have been pretty fucking cool and true to their ideals. They produce content you can't find anywhere else and is useful to forming opinions on a number of foreign policy and counter culture subjects. Also they're owned by fox entertainment who are no longer legally under the same umbrella as fox news. If you consider it culturally acceptable to watch the Simpsons or family guy then you should have no problems with vice on fox's account. If you think this will be a worse option than h2 I don't know what to say to you. Vice's journalism and anything Shane Smith has been involved in are really quality.

I wouldn't, no. But in my greater ignorance, I'd have just as good a reason not to trust anything on it.

I don't know Shane Smith and have no reason to trust a thing he says.

I don't see how the cultural acceptability of watching content relates to trusting said content.

I don't think it's a worse option than h2. I don't consider either of them to be options.

Forgot you were 2 kool 4 skool...

I think it'll be a pretty cool development for TV journalism as a whole. It's an entire channel predicated on gritty realism, directed towards a conscientious younger demographic with a big TV budget but the same producers who founded it. Feel free to hate tho.

It has nothing to do with being cool, and everything to do with not being so foolish as to trust information on the TV.

I trust pbs pretty emphatically. Is that wrong? Should I not do that? I forgot Charlie Rose and Neil Degrades Tyson were shills for public service and education.

It's also not about trusting vice, cuz I don't think anyone should, but that doesn't mean they should be avoided either.

well a week from now everyone alive will have had access to H2O in the next few days, although current numbers are harder to find. I'm guessing your meme was a joke but those values are based on true subscription numbers so sample size and standard deviation aren't applicable.

Honestly this will probably mean a bunch of good content gets created. Dunno why y'all are hating. Even the best channels on TV I only like 5 or 10% of what they put out, so what's wrong with that if you can pick and choose?

Vice guide to travel has taught me a lot and they definitely go places not many journalists dare:

Yeah, I was just being silly, Mr. Pants.

I've seen some nice Vice shows.... and some that make me want to put my head in one.

Not even hatin'.

word, I tried to set up my original post in such a way that it could lead easily into a pro or con discussion, I'm a little surprised by all the negativity though because I think by and large VICE are good people doing honest work, as long as you actually look at the meat and potatoes journalism and not the fluff, that's why the Kanye show scares me.

VICE isn't the best as a news outlet, but I think it's pretty good entertainment. 'Gonzo journalism' is no replacement for actual investigative reporting, but it certainly shows me things around the globe that I'm glad I've seen.

Like this one I saw a couple days ago:

As long as they devote some air time to their spin off channel "Munchies" I'm cool wit it..

The stuff on munchies is far more interesting and informative than anything on Food Network's two channels...

VICE is and always will be awesome, however I'm sad to see them drift away from their spot on HBO as the justified fears of what they could become are obvious.

Still, I'll hold faith in Shane Smith and hope to keep seeing cool shit.

From Cannibalistic warlords in Liberia, N. Korean labor camps hidden inside of Syberia, numerous crazy Middle Eastern stories from Turkey, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and of coarse Syria.. Drug culture, music, and food.. Their coverage is pretty full spectrum and always interesting.
