Got her all hooked up everything powers up fine...can enter and exit bios....if i dont enter bios at startup i get a black screen that says "reboot and select proper boot device"-insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

Im thinking its telling me to install the OS....got the wife on a mission at best buy getting 8.1 which pisses me off...$120 for the stupid thing.

Going to install video card after i vet it up and running i wanted to keep it simple for now

With Windows 10 coming, it's supposedly a lot harder to get a pirated copy now that it's a very cloud based platform.

Also, more RAM isn't always the answer, but faster RAM is. His 1333 mhz RAM is a decent frequency. That motherboard could probably handle more though.

The biggest bottlneck in most PCs is the hard drive with the RPM's needing rev time. If I were you Kish, your first upgrade should be replacing that 1tb hard drive with a smaller solid state drive if you don't use much space to begin with. Most ssd's come with cloning kits too so you don't have to reinstall all your software.

I know you'll probably be happy with the new 1 tb hard drive, but it's like driving a car with instant torque comparatively.

so when I installed windows (which only took 12 minutes!) the desktop doesn't seem to fit my screen correctly (could barely see the top of the Start button or the time and date in lower left corner) and text seems larger than normal and kind of hazy or blurry...websites that I visit frequently look totally different. i've messed with every setting that I can find and it's only marginally better. what's funny is in the uefi bios screen there is a "resolution toggle" button if I click on it looks fantastic...text is small clear and crisp and the page doesn't look zoomed in on. my 8 year old computer has a better picture quality. i've adjusted every setting on the monitor too but that helps only very little...it's actually a 20 inch or so 1080p tv... maybe i'll try connecting my old computer to it and see how it looks....maybe i'll need to use my old monitor but it's vga and i'll need to find an adapter

Sounds like there's a very good chance you just haven't installed your nvidia drivers yet.

so what I just did is re-enabled my onboard graphics and plugged my hdmi cable into the pc and not the video card and the screen looks GREAT except for the screen size is too big...I can barely see the red X button top right corner and only half of the taskbar is visible.

seems like it all went to hell once I installed the drivers off of one of these cd's but I can't remember which one...this is why I hate dickin with video cards...every single time it seems like I have problems....I should stick to hammers and shovels and let someone else do my computers

You have a nvidia card, so all you need to do here is stick with the default drivers for a bit while you go right here:

Drivers | GeForce

Use their Automatic Driver Updates near the top, and the service will update your machine with the latest working drivers.

(the same goes with any other device you have. If you're able to connect to the internet with this or another machine, just get the latest drivers online because it's more than likely any drivers included on these CDs are already outdated)

you also in theory should be able to squish the used range of your screen by pressing some combination of buttons on the monitor itself, but you mentioned you tried that so i dunno

^^so my driver version is 344.11 and the latest on the link you gave me sir-ex is version 353.30
downloading now so we'll see what happens. I saw that link yesterday but I assumed you only need that if you wanted to play batman because it talks about that in the description.

^this monitor/tv is pretty basic it won't allow you to adjust screen size, aspect ration or anything other than basic color, contrast, brightness etc..

Yeah you wouldn't need the very latest driver for the problem I thought you might have, so who knows if that'll help.

You already checked resolution and display settings in the nvidia control panel and all that?

edit: you already said you did that.. argh this is bugging me lol I want your computer to work before I have to go on a road trip in a few minutes

You should also check monitor refresh rate, at Control Panel- Personalisation- Screen adjustments- Advanced settings- Screen- Refresh rate, and make it as high as possible.

Check your windows screen resolution as well. Right click anywhere on your desktop and since you're using a HDTV make sure the resolution is set to 1920x1080. (My monitor is 1920x1200, which is why its showing that as recommended settings in the pic.)

installing the updated drivers didn't help AT ALL!

back to square one...I just don't get it....my resolution is set to 1920x1080, refresh rate is 60hz (the highest setting), everything in the nvidia control panel looks good all settings are where they should be to my knowledge. in bios I have onboard graphics disabled and the pcie slot is set to boot 1st which it does by default anyway.

60 Hz refresh rate is by far too low. It should be able to do 72-100 Hz specially with your HDTV! I think the system either doesn't recognize your monitor correctly or doesn't fully use the potential of your excellent graphics card.
Try to change the monitor driver by selecting another monitor driver from the system list or ask for monitor identification from windows control panel.
There is a choice for flat screen monitors of various resolution capabilities.

if you dont have any settings on the monitor look for an auto adjust button.. but i assume you pressed all the buttons already

try uninstalling the driver for the monitor in device manager and then reboot the computer and it should search for the newest one automatically
