Oops I meant Purity by Jonathan Franzen, Freedom was his last book.

Mad Max is a pretty solid choice. That film was a visualization masterpiece imo.

(I need to expose myself to more foreign media)

My Top 5 across all media types, based strictly on what brought me the most enjoyment, and in no particular order:

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

No other movie this year made me think to myself during the movie, "this movie is incredible." But during a wide-shot of the entire entourage in the 2nd half of the movie, this is exactly what I thought. The atmosphere, the pacing, the visuals, the sensation that was that initial viewing in the theater on opening night was one of the best movie going experiences I've ever enjoyed.

2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I have truly mixed feeling about this game. On the one hand, it is unfinished. There's no doubt that Kojima was not allowed to realize his full vision for the game due to publishing constraints, and this is a terrible shame. It reminds me of Ultima 9 and umpteen other games all over again. But on the other hand, I spent over 120 hours with the game's single player and I loved, loved my time with it. I do not know how many times I said, "WOW" out loud while playing. The David Bowie cover at the beginning of the FINAL Kojima Metal Gear game brought tears to my eyes. The technical near-perfection of the game itself was just astounding and the fact that only a few variations on mission types could be so damn entertaining for so long is a testament to how god damn beautiful and refined the gameplay was. Perhaps the world just wasn't ready for Kojima's vision to be realized. Or, perhaps we don't yet deserve it.

3. Bojack Horseman

This series has won me over big time. I watched the entire season in a few days and for those few days, I was enraptured. I love the characters and their relationships. I laughed. I cried. I was disgusted and inspired. I'm almost afraid for season 3 because I'm having trouble keeping my expectations in check, which is silly because it's just a cartoon :P

4. Rocket League

I'll probably be playing this until the PS5 comes out. It is my go-to online game and is easily, EASILY the best sports game ever made. I love it! You would never think a quick five minute game of RC-rocket-car-soccer could produce such intense emotions, but it can capture the same incredible tension and competitive spirit you can get from Counterstrike, and it's fun as hell.

5. Inside Out

I cried three or four times during that movie. My daughter cried out NO!!! and cried in my arms when the imaginary friend faded away. I'm getting all emotional recounting this as I type. Yeah it's Pixar pulling on the easy to pluck heart strings of family and innocence but god damn it I won't be cynical about it.

There was a lot of good stuff though, so I wanted to make a few honorable mentions:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I think a part of me wanted to find everything wrong with it. The truth is, there really isn't that much wrong with it. Aside from the kind of pointless death star thing (I really hope they try something experimental for the sequel and stray from that format, a la Empire) and the rotating helicopter shot at the very end (sorry that sounds nitpicky but it totally took me out of that moment at the last second, plus I recognized the island they shot it on and that was kinda irksome) the movie was very well acted and very well shot. It was a straight up SOLID movie. I want more mystical force talk in the second one though, and I want Luke to have more than just 5 minutes in the movie. He needs a solid 20 minutes of Yoda-esque tutelage.

Fallout 4

I considered this instead of Metal Gear Solid V. But I haven't beaten it yet, and even if I had, I think I still would have sided with Metal Gear. However, Fallout 4 is superb, almost mind boggling to me with the amount of detail and character. I find myself laughing at things that happen in that game all the time (in a good way), both at random events as well as parts of the story (the story, actually, really damn good, both the main plot as well as all the characters and companions). And damn is this game DENSE. Playing the game is like looking at one of those Where's Waldo? books. I've played through multiple buildings, died, had to do it again, and noticed a whole bunch of stuff I didn't before simply because there's SO MUCH STUFF to notice!
The combat is intense as hell too and super fun even though I die often playing at the 2nd hardest difficulty.
But that brings me to its most major drawback - loading. There's a lot of loading. A lot of long loading. Sometimes the loading screen has to load.
Worth it. I'm 35 hours in and I look forward to a hundred more.
(also I have to mention that the graphics are seriously underrated. Yes the character models are shitty, especially compared to the monsters which are phenomenal, but aside from that... dude.. maybe it's because I grew up during the entire history of 3D gaming and my standards are all at a wack, but the look of this game impresses me very much)

The Witcher 3

I bought this game because it went on sale but I only played it for around 8 hours. I'm going to save it for 2016 I think. But it deserves a mention because I meta-appreciate how fucking insane it is that a development team like CD Projekt Red was able to accomplish what they did. And the graphics holyfuckingwatdafuck are you kidding me? This can be done, now, already?

Bloodborne

Still haven't beaten it. Will. Eventually. It really is a perfect game for when you're in the mood for that unique flavour that is Bloodborne. The process of mastering the levels, mastering the weapons and playstyle, and finally, mastering that god damn bitch of a boss is highly satisfying. But you gotta be in the mood.

The Peanuts Movie

It was sweet. And it was another theater movie with my daughter, and that's special to me.
