Top 5 Media of 2016
The year is just about over! No more new releases, everything that's gonna be out this year is out this year, SO

what are your TOP 5 pieces of media this year??? (that's movies, video games, books, articles, etc)

Here are my top 5 picks:

1. Doom

Usually I don't pick an absolute favorite, but this is my absolute favorite piece of media this year. This game has a 12 hour campaign that I played for literally 100 hours I liked it so much. I could not get enough of the constant, frenetic violence and churning techo-metal. Highly focused on perfecting the gameplay mechanics it employs, I have never played an FPS that nailed so brilliantly its intended design. If you have a PC and you like FPS, you have to play Doom. It's not just the best FPS of 2016, it's the best FPS in a decade.

2. Captain America: Civil War

I waited until December to finally watch this. For some reason I felt pretty cynical about it and thought it would suck. But boy was I wrong!
This movie was FUN and COOL and jerked off my nerd boner constantly. When scarlet witch totally pwned Vision and smashed him a mile into the Earth I came all over my face! When spider man showed up and starting kicking the asses of avengers while wise cracking, I came all over my face! When the main bad guy filled up the sink, in the first few frames as the sink fills up, it was clear that the other bad guy's head was able to avoid submerging the nose and mouth as it was out of the water as you see the sink become completely full! Then in the next shot his face is submerged! WTF! Oh well!

3. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Honestly when I first played this game, I didn't beat it. In fact, I felt kind of put off. And you know, I almost made the mistake of thinking it was the game's fault.
But it wasn't. I realized down the road when I came back to it, the reason I put it down was because I wasn't able to devote enough attention to it. Because this is a game that requires it. It's extremely dense and full of nuance and detail for the player to notice, if they're focused. Doing a non-lethal playthrough, reading and thinking about all the many articles, emails, notes etc., listening to conversations between the citizens of Prague, taking the time to experiment and just patiently allowing myself to take it all in, you realize and appreciate just how much work and care went into this game, and it's a hell of a game. Like Human Revolution before it, Eidos Montreal has once again proved that they do Deus Ex right, and they deserve to be commended for not straying away from the amount of detail required in such a game.

4. Blackstar, by David Bowie

I don't listen to this album often because I still get misty eyed when I do. I don't want to talk about it, but it's on this list.

5. Final Fantasy 15

I thought it was gonna suck. I really thought it would, and perhaps going into it with low expectation skewed my experience of it, but I actually loved playing this game. Objectively it's not as good as games like The Witcher 3, and there are problems with how the story is presented. But the world is beautiful. The story that is there is interesting, and by the 2nd half, gets really cool. And the whole bros on a road trip thing is actually executed really well. They didn't nail everything (the battle system could have been a lot deeper), but this is definitely one of those 'more than the sum of its parts' situations. Better than FF12. WAYYYY better than FF13. I'm happy I got a final fantasy game that I enjoyed the whole way through again, and I'm stoked for new content to be released down the line.

Honorable mentions:

Xcom 2 : I still haven't beaten it. I keep dying! But sure is a good game!

Gears of War 4 : It's not really my kind of game, but it's the first AAA game that I worked on so I have to put it here!

Kung Fu Panda 3 : I had a great time watching the whole trilogy with kiddo. When Poe becomes true chi power dragon master at the end? AWWWWWW YEAH BADASS

It's hard enough to pick my top media in a specific category.

1) Podcasts. I'm not going pick a specific one but I had a really really bad year this year. I know everyone is saying fuck 2016 but that's because of Trump and a bunch of celeb deaths. I unfortunately went through six jobs, dealt with legal issues, financial issues, crippling depressing, substance abuse, lost my apartment, lost a bunch of friends, lost my car. I hated being in the present and I dreaded the future. Weekly podcasts were the one thing I looked forward to. Always made me laugh and a lot of interesting discussions.

2) Twitter. The only social media I'm really active on and the same reasons above. Interesting discussion and I could be having the worst day and since I'm following so many funny people I would get a good laugh and just get my insane thoughts out there. It's really like therapy for me lol.

3) Overwatch. Great game. I've sunk close to 200 hours into. Also after college it's pretty rare I get to spend time with my friends in person or online and this was one of the few games that bought a handful of us together once or twice a week.

4) Firewatch. Most of my gaming was consumed by online multiplayer this year but I loved the experience Firewatch game me. Really made me think and the themes of guilt it gave off I found I could really connect with at that time.

5) Vinyl. This one is hard for me so I'm just going to pick Vinyl since it got cancelled. Was pretty disappointed with TV since year. Walking Dead improved this season but still overall more of the same and Mr. Robot season 2 was so disappointing. I loved the main character of Vinyl constant self destructive behavior burning everything and everyone to the ground he got near.

Floating Points - Live tour in support of his album from 2015. With a custom laser and the tightest live band. He released this 20 minute track, got to hear it for the first time live and that was probably my greatest live music experience of all time (next to seeing Radiohead)

Google Pixel! My most life changing device I've ever purchased.

Outstanding Comedic Writing - Man Seeking Women, People of Earth, You're the Worst, Transparent, ATLANTA, etc. There's some really incredible comedic television shows being made right now. Comedy is the best medicine.

Vinyl - old records and a new (old) set of loudspeakers from 1972. Discovering sounds from 30-50 years ago has done a lot for my appreciation of sounds from today as well as falling in love with music again. I also spent my x-mas money buying some new records, some of my favourites from the past decade.

that's four, that's all I got.
