Most David Lynch movies...Eraserhead is crazy, Blue Velvet and The Lost Highway are a little more mainstream...if you want to see a good documentary with a kicking soundtrack, watch Life and Debt, it is about Jamaica and the soundtrack was made by Tuff Gong. Hmm, what else...if you get the Sundance channel, watch "Weed," it is a documentary of the Cannabis Cup in A-dam...the Sundance Channel actually has a lot of good independant films, I watch movies off of it more then most channels actually...

I second on Better off Dead, and would add 'One Crazy Summer' to the John Cusack list. There is a scene in that movie when Bobcat Goldthwait gets stuck inside a Godzilla suit......that I find extremely hilarious.

Additionally, I would add The Endless Summer, and The Endless Summer II.
Great documentaries about a couple of guys who travel the world, to surf.

ES II has a GREAT soundtrack from Gary Hoey, a guitar player that walks along side Joe Satriani.

I'm not sure how to measue what's underrated...

I will say The Fifth Element is far and away my favorite movie a lot of people *still* haven't seen.

But in terms of movies that are obscure-ish, I think:

What Dreams May Come
The Fountain
L.I.E.

The 5th.....lots to like in that movie overall, but I really strays toward more conventional SCI FI, which doesn't always go with the masses. To bad for them.

On the SCI FI genre...

The Last Starfighter
Great flick with special effects that were on the cutting edge at the time.

Enemy Mine
Great performances from Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.

Tron
The original flick in the 80's has inspired a sequel due out in 2010

Serenity
Feature length film based on the 'Firefly' series, which FOX foolishly canceled.

Spun was boring. Characters were interesting but I almost fell asleep by the end. Maybe that was the intention of the movie cuz I think the main character fell asleep at the end too.

Another one? Aliens. I know everyone likes it already but really... Aliens should have its own national holiday.

2 of the funniest movies I saw & never heard of before [my son turned me onto these....] are:
Don't Be A Menace [the Wayans Bros.]
Dead Man On Campus

Don't Be A Menace is so UN-politically correct that I loved it. I can't stand these 'watch-groups' who try & tell the general population what's right & wrong.
Dead Man On Campus is funny as hell. Especially the dude who was insane with partying.

I can't believe I am going to say this. But Mean Girls is gold. I watched it with some chick friends of mine and I couldn't stop cracking up at how cheesey it was. I think it was done on purpose but it was awesome.

Yes, Menace....
Along with that, I would nominate CB4, early 90's parody of Rap Music starring Chris Rock. Any hip hop fan should have this in their collection. IMO one of the best soundtracks for a movie in this genre.

Sweat from my balls lyrics

For the ladies, a hundred-thirty pounds of beef, yeah
Chinky eyes, curly hair and gold teeth
Swingin with this here stud, you need practice
I'm leavin used rubbers on the mattress

When I'm with my homies, we're rollin
Can't love a car unless it's stolen
Don't ask me what the price is,
but it's more than pussy tickle devices

(And you can feel the..)
Sweat from my balls!
(You can feel the..)
Sweat from my balls!
(You can feel the..)
Sweat from my balls!
(YOU CAN FEEL THE!!!)
Sweat from my balls!
(You can feel the..)
Sweat-sweat from my balls!
(YOU CAN FEEL THE!!!)
Sweat from my balls!
