Ha! I did not realize you meant music artist at first. Well then, I must assume you mean for the time being, correct. To me, there is simply no "Best 3"; it's just not feasible.

Jaco Pastorius/Weather Report
Mars Volta
Various Jazz artists (Tie between Dave Brubeck & Django Rienhardt for the moment)

There you have it.

k'naan. hip-hop/rap/african style stuff. check him out even if you aren't really into rap.

and a 900 band tie for my third spot
k'naan is one of my all time favorites.

I disagree because I believe in KRS-ones definition of what hip hop is therefor putting pac in the hip hop genre and beastie boys in the rap genre.

and dude, elton john just takes me away sometimes haha.

i don't know why you're so confused, I was disagreeing with how you placed certain artist's in certain genre's.

post krs-one's definition of hip-hop you speak of...

i still think you are talking out of your ass and wrong...

tupac=gangsta rapper who rapped over west coast p-funk beats

beastie boys= genre bending, multi-instrumentalists who self produced records that blended punk, hardcore, hip-hop, classic rock into something completely unique, which is much closer to hip-hop than rap...

they are great artists and i respect the fact that they write their own music very much.
I see a hip hop artist as someone who not only produces change through music but also through their life outside of music. like tupac video taped police, he educated people about his legal problems and how to deal with them properly and he wrote songs really to educate and hopefully make a difference where i feel the beastie boys were more of a great band turned mtv gimmick

If i could only listen to one artists work for the rest of my life... I think after careful deliberation I would choose Tool.

Their music is complex enough to keep me interested for a long time.
