Your preferred rap style
When it comes to straight rapping, all beats aside, I can't get away from things from NYC.
I'm just sitting here listening to It Was Written and it's hella underrated. Besides Nas I'd say this style is exemplified by Big L, Jay Z, Mobb Deep, Capone N Noreaga, Jadakiss, Styles P. I also decided I hate swizz beats. Guy completely sucks, almost ruined the lox. |

I prefer the poetic side, which I won't list because I don't wanna get pwn'd again. I will mention del tha funkee homosapien though, because most of his stuff reminds me of nerd rap. also, pirate rap, like captain dan and the scurvey crew.

i love early 90s-mid 90s lyricists, specially the shit coming out of NYC. intelligent message, smart original lyrics not centered around the genre cliche of bitches and guns, that shit was real.
take beats into account and they still got it. jazz samples. wish people still used jazz samples today. also, the west coast scene in the late 80s, early 90s. all rap/hip hop since then has been rooted in these two groups ive described imo.

if you could direct me to any good hip hop that uses jazz samples i'd be delighted. im not familiar with ALOT of rap/hip hop. such a huge genre now, and alot of the mainstream stuff is trash.

it all depends on the mood i'm in. If i'm home chillin blazed on my own i might listen to cannibal ox or sage francis. if i'm high but doing shit like making beer or working on my car i like wu tang, jay z, or some old nas. it varies very heavily from time to time. i have these mix cds in my car that go from triple six mafia to cunning linguists to sean price to aseop rock and so on like that.

I don't have a dominant preference. While I also love Nas and Styles P, I have to give it to Project Pat, Big L, Geto Boys, Eric B. & Rakim, WTC--the only style I stay away from entirely is rap-metal or rap-rock. Walk This Way (Run DMC and Aerosmith) is as bad as it gets IMO.

First of all. I'm gonna come out and say I'm primarily a beats guy. Secondly, I am, by no means, a rap aficionado I just dabble in it. But those aside I'd have to say I really like the southern drawl T.I. deal where it just sounds effortless. Flow gets defs plus points in my books.
Oh yeah, and I'm a sucker for anything mainstream nowadays that doesn't straight up embrace the auto tune as a bona fide instrument haha. |

I can't agree more Rue. NYC was where the game was at before big Producers became the ticket to platinum.
There were constant mind-expanding joints in the dorm room back in 2000... Nas, AZ, Cormega, Prodigy chairing the sessions. Enlightenment constantly streaming in from Napster every 15 minutes or so.. thick haze of goodness chillin in the air. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q0PccPy_pTM&hl=en&fs =1"></param><param name="allowFullScree n" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q0PccPy_pTM&hl=en&fs =1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="tru e" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
