Not independent jazz, but an indie/jazz hybrid of music.
Modest Mouse with freeform brass, woodwind and drum solos?

Karate is an indie-jazz band, they dont have brass or wind instruments at all tho

I was introduced to "Man Man" a while ago. They've got a lot of the indie jazz feel.

Their album "Rabbit Habits" is amazing.

Bonobo live performances - "freeform brass, woodwind and drum solos." I just bought this DVD for $22.99 earlier today - i researched it and the first thing i found was a rip of the whole thing on to megaupload. 74 minutes long btw. REALLY GOOD.
