Opinions on Acoustic/Electric Basses...........
For the bass players out there. I'm looking to buy a nice solid acoustic/electric. Currently this is what I'm looking at: http://www.music123.com/Michael-Kell...47709.Music123 . However this might be alittle on the up scale side of what I need.
What I really need to know is there any one with input on a guitar they have already? I've been playing for 9 years now, so I'm not too shy on buying something nice. I've seen $150 that I don't really think are suitable at all, and I've seen $2200 Martins, which are way over the top. Which is why I think this $600ish dollar one fits my needs over all. Cost and reliablity. But am curious to hear others experiances. Right now I have a lefthanded 2001 Fender Jazz Bass and a Hartke 60 Watt combo amp with one 10" speaker, if anyone is interested. Also what would you all pay for that indiviually? They are both in great condition and haven't been played hard or treated badly.....Also, no lefthanded jokes, just answer the question, because in Vancouver ever 3rd person is lefthanded that I meet and is a musician. Thanks

If you already have an electric bass then I say go with an acoustic this time around. It's nice not having to plug shit in and get caught up in all those goddamn wires.
Also, in my humble opinion, Ibanez makes the sweetest bass guitars. Here's a sexy example. |

Perhaps I didn't make it clear that I intend on selling my electric bass, and am looking for an acoustic/electric model, meaning I can plug it in as well as play with out plugging in. The Left handed is what limits me on my selection to some point.

I don't really dig the acoustic basses so much. They never really seem to have a great unplugged sound... unless you're looking at an upright, which you aren't.
Have you thought about an electric hollowbody? Those are pretty sweet. I think the $600 price range should get you something good. Ibanez does make good affordable instruments. Play whatever you can... you can always switch around a righty to a lefty, just gotta adjust the bridge and tension. Might have to deal with upside down tuners, but ya know, do what you gotta. Your bass, probably somewhere between $3-500; amp $1-200 |

Have you considered taking a right handed guitar and stringing for left hand use? If your style of playing doesn't take you up the neck too far, the cut out on the wrong side shouldn't affect it. This would give you more options and a better price.

i dunno if most of you guys have ever even seen an acoustic/electric, but right where the "controls" of the acoustic/electric are is where he'd have to rest the guitar on his knee... doesn't really work out too well... Furthermore it seriously hampers your ability to fret notes closer to the guitar... the bass is limited enough, i see no reason why he'd want to limit his ability to play further.

I dig acoustic basses, but don't really know anything other than that. I'm a guitar guy. Always wanted an acoustic one. Wish I had some help to offer.

Meh. An upright acoustic is beautiful, for sure.
An acoustic bass that's built in the fashion of an acoustic guitar just doesn't do it for me. I think they sound tinny, and not nearly deep enough. To each his own, I reckon. |

Okay Sage Tree....
So far it seems that we all would like for you to get an upright bass. Keep your amp, get some pick-ups for it.... No problem about handedness... And the size of it should protect you from dying prematurely in an accident.

I would like to say thanks to everyone for their input. I was quite hoping to get someone who had played one at some point.
The upright will not fit into an RV, which in the end in the point of getting rid of the amp and elctric But I am glad that you are all concerned about my accident and handedness. Most of the 'accidents' come on construction sites and other jobs where there is a handed tool that people use and the left handed person is using it with the left anyways. Fortunatly I"m very ambadextrous in alot of ways, and use all my tools saftly. The one way I don't prefer to be right handed is with my instrument. I can write, bat, throw catch, cut ect....but this is a bit of a pride issue with me for sure. I'm happy I'm left handed and not like the other 90% of the pop, so just a side bar. I don't really know where that 'FACT' comes from. What about active lifestyle, and vegetarian? There are too many variables to make a good statistic. So the questions still stands.....Has anyone who has used an electric/acoustic bass have any input for me. I do appriciate the accurate response I got from some, and really like reading the concern you all had for my problem, your help is still welcomed, I do realize that I didn't outline a 5 point plan for all my reasons for buying. Thanks Love Sage

I'll have to take a trip up to Guitar Center tomorrow and let you know the one I played. I'm fairly certain it was a/e, but may have been simply acoustic. Either way, I liked it a lot, but like I said, I'm more a guitar dude so I may have different standards. I've always wanted one, but what I'd really like is a 12 string acoustic guitar.
Nothing wrong with being left handed, some of the best people ever were, especially musicians. Also, my mother is left handed and she's a goddamned saint. Also, big ups on the vegetarianism. |

I've played an Ibanez, and Washburn acoustic, both were OK, but nothing to write home about. I think they have problems with volume, which is my main concern. Which, if you're ever going to be jamming with someone, you want to make sure you can hear each other.
You should get one of those ones that the Mariachi band uses. Just because they look cool. (Sound cool too) No, for real, the only way you'll be able to find one is by actually playing them. I believe a lot of online vendors have a return policy so you could probably exchange a few times if it's too hard finding the left-handed basses in the store. Good luck! |

My problem is in upper BC there isn't shit around for 10 hours in either direction. Especially not a good guitar store. I know there is a vendor in Vancouver that sells the guitar I want. I just have to think of the next time I'll be flying down that way. Which might be in July-August.
Just wondered what you all thought made then a good or bad model if you've played one. Again thanks for all the input everybody.

Too bad its not a pj bass coz I might be interested.
I play a left handed pj Hohner that has incredible sound, sustain, and holds tune forever. I payed $800 US for it years ago. Check em out, Hohner makes an electric/acoustic and I highly recommend Hohner for the price/quality.
