INFLUENTIAL is the key word here

chuck d/ flav
and biggie

i dont even really like biggie, but he has influenced rap/hip hop so fucking much.
not even necessarily in a good way.

This is really what my first response was all about....where did it start? People who came before rap who influenced rap still puts them in the scope in my mind. I was thinking Skat was an early form as well.

african music (the continent) is very percussive with very "rappish" spoken word lyrics. also, those old beatniks and their spoken word "raps" over bongos in the 50's/60's. i dont think hip hop has one point of origin. thats why when you answer the question "who is the most influential rapper", there are numerous correct answers.

as far as i'm concerned the most influential rapper ever was snow.

what's more hip hop than a white dude with a fake jamaican accent from canada?

nothing i tells ya

Rap is as organic and ever evolving as any other musical form...Trying to pinpoint the origins is near impossible because all artists borrow what they like from everything they hear and different group members bring different influences, sounds, and techniques...No one person can lay claim to creating it, just taking it to new highs in evolution...

I would say you can pin point to some degree where what we consider to be rap really started. Jamaica. Dub music was the first time people started taking pre-recorded music and altering it. Furthermore the popular format in Jamaica at that time was a DJ spinning dub with someone rhythmically talking over it. Not complex rhymes, but rhymes none the less.

Toasting was around in Jamaica long before dub .

Seriously, if I wanted to I could just throw the next gay guy I come across right up against a wall and give him an anal assault and he wouldn't complain one bit.

Most influential is tough, since you can point at a select few that really shifted the genre, and they are pretty much all listed here. I'll go for some later choices that I highly respect and think they are still influencing shit:

de la

tribe

J/K fuck MC Hammer...

pharcyde

and last but not least:
