i think the really great and noticeable artists are the ones that can use tastes of many genres/subgenres, w/e you wanna call them, in each track they produce. the inovative ones dont stick to one form, they build off of it and draw influence from many different styles and even nonmusical sounds. and after a while that fresh sound they create becomes the foundation for a new sound to be created by drawing on new sources of inspiration.

it would be really difficult at this point to come up with a completely "new" never been touched style/ structure. so people end up working up from the basics and modifying the sound slightly to make it their own.

while i agree with the first paragraph, and i think there are too few artists that don't stick to any genre, i don't think any truly 100% creative artist builds off any genre.

i think it is completely possible, as long as you don't have any structure in mind when creating, to create new styles and structures. as soon as you have a particular style in mind, you are going to lean toward and build off of that. to me thats not being creative, thats modifying what someone else has already created.

imo to be truly creative you don't start with any style/structure, you just start from whatever is in your mind

I don't agree. I think categorizing music helps people discover more artists altogether. For instance I used to be into Green Day when I was a preteen. If I searched for other "punk" bands then I might run into bands that sound nothing like green day such as suicidal tendencies, or deep wound, or spazz because theyre all under the umbrella of punk rock. But if I searched for "pop punk" I would find bands much more similar like the The vandals or Nofx. But if I searched for "East bay pop punk" I'd find bands like Sweet baby, the Mr T experience, and crimpshrine who are much better than anyone else I just named in relation to liking bands that sound somewhat like green day.
Without overcategorization we'd have Against Me! and Joni Mitchell under the same category of folk music.
And what is our other option? Just calling all music, music? So next time someone go's to search for something, and someones like "what do you like?" you're like "Music dude...".

I totally feel you on this subject, but it's really necessary to advertise exactly what you are these days, since everyone and their mother has music on myspace and such now. You cant take the time to listen to everybody.

Oh and yeah, Gabber a.k.a. hardcore is just really obnoxious loud bullshit, and hardstyle is really obnoxious loud bullshit with shitty trance music burning out your brain cells in the background.

And as far as dubstep artists...Shit. My girl and I go to a ton of Jungle d & b, and ragga jungle parties in LA/Hollywood/Downtown. The two artists I think of with dubstep are the local Dj's GENERAL MALICE who does mostly ragga jungle/hip hop but his newest record (I think it's the newest) has tons of dubstep on it like the song "Step with me". And then there's R.A.W. aka HEADHUNTER aka 6BLOCC...Anyways. As R.A.W. he does mostly jungle, but as 6blocc he does mostly dubstep.

Yes, I do. because I try to appreciate all aspects of music

And i think what you are describing proves exactly my point. Instead of just browsing the net finding new things, you are confining yourself to certain sub genres, therefore possibly missing a ton of very good music because you suspect the industry has defined them correctly so for you to not like them.

In my opinion, there is beauty to be found in every major genre. I personally like to explore all music and find the good in every artist, and if i can't then i don't like that artist.

Dude, I see what youre saying. Browsing the net finding random shit is cool, but in this day of myspace music and FTP programs it is fucking impossible to weed out what sucks and what doesnt. If I searched for FOLK, or PUNK, or INDIE I would get atleast 80% bullshit. I have found way more bands by looking at how they describe themselves or how others describe them.

And believe me I listen to basically everything... Outlaw country, blue grass, americana, celtic folk, celtic punk, folk punk, antifolk, freak folk, indie pop, noise, indie rock, industrial rock, hardcore punk, first wave punk, 60s garage, surf rock, drum n bass, grime etc As a lover of all music I still think in modern times it helps to know what youre getting before you get it.

The problem isnt too many sub genres, the problem is too many people trying to place themselves in the same umbrella genre. Like, how can you justify having Blink 182 and xCharles Bronsonx both defined as punk? It's just to general of a term, as are most.

When you search only certain sub sub sub genres, you will miss too much music. music exploration always has been and still should be weeding through the majority of crap to find the gems. Thats why its exploration. stop being lazy and put some effort into it. (no offense to you in particular)
