I don't remember it ever being good, but I certainly remember it being better.

"Indie" is certainly not worse than "emo". Both are terribly disgusting shells of what were once good genres however.

It really can't, but I'm assuming he was using it in the same manner as how most college rock and such got lumped into indie. Even shit on majors is referred to as indie now which makes no sense and there is apparently a perceivable indie sound. Also why I tossed quotes around it.

When I went, and I saw The Deftones and Rancid. That was in 1998 (fuck I'm old, but to my credit I was only 14 at the time) and I haven't gone again since. That show kicked ass, but it definitely doesn't look like anything I'd be into now.
