How do you like that xr20? Can you put your own sampled music into it via SD card or whatever or are you stuck with the preset sounds? The impression I got when it first came out was that it was a pretty static machine.

just presets, but you can change the sounds. also has the -/0/+ octaves, you just have to get used to doing stuff on 12 pads. i usually just do my samples from mp3 or wav to wavepad or edison in FL since i got rid of my fantom S anyway, so the ability to map samples to my pads isn't a neccessity for me.
for making loops it's top notch though.. they didn't have a new one in the store, so i've been using one that they leased out for 28 days. when the new one comes in, i just bring it back and trade for the new. so i don't have the instruction manual and have just been teaching myself. it's really awesome for live performances and UBER portable.

it's only a real problem if it's the absolute only thing you have to make beats, but even still, there's a TON you can do with it. especially on the go. and it has a TON of sounds.. over 700.

yeah but man the hallmark of the akai mpc (the xr20 in my mind is like an extremely watered down mpc for kids) is the fact that you can chop up samples on the damn machine which is so fuckin cool holy shit i would kill for an mpc1000. or even an mpc500.

with the xr20 you can build songs too. the step-edit is fucking awesome. it all depends on how you make your beats. if you're purely sample based, then go with an mpd and get a keyboard you can hook up to it. if you like builing your own beats and shit from scratch and then adding samples onto that, go with the xr20 and then you can sample from dvd or just wavs or mp3s on your computer. the only thing limiting what you can do is your creativity.

"New Jack Swing, or "swingbeat",[1] is a hybrid style popular from the late-1980s into the mid-1990s, which fuses the rhythms, samples and production techniques of hip-hop with the urban contemporary sound of R&B. The new jack swing style developed as many previous R&B styles did, by combining elements of older styles with newer trends. It uses mellifluously soulful solo or harmonizing vocals sung over rhythms and "street" beats derived from urban musical influences. The sound of new jack swing comes from the hip hop "swing" beats created by drum machine, and hardware samplers, which was popular during the golden age of hip hop, with contemporary R&B style singing. The term "new jack swing" was coined by writer-filmmaker Barry Michael Cooper (screenwriter for the films New Jack City, Above the Rim, and Sugar Hill), in a cover story in the Village Voice titled, "Teddy Riley Groove Master: Harlem Gangsters Raise a Genius", dated October 18, 1988. Merriam-Webster's online dictionary defines new jack swing as "pop music usually performed by black musicians that combines elements of jazz, funk, rap, and rhythm and blues[2] Encyclopędia Britannica calls it the "... most pop-oriented rhythm-and-blues music since 1960s Motown", since its "...performers were unabashed entertainers, free of artistic pretensions; its songwriters and producers were commercial professionals." New jack swing did not take up the trend of using sampled beats, and instead created beats using the then-new SP-1200 and Roland 808 drum machines to lay an "insistent beat under light melody lines and clearly enunciated vocals."[1] Encyclopędia Britannica states that the "key producers" were Babyface and Teddy Riley.[1]"

i got my fantomS in grade 11 [5 years ago] for about 800$, hardly used [leased out for less than a month prior to me buying it].. sold it on ebay 3 years ago for 1100. mpc1000's are like $1100 CDN new (Long & McQuade - Products - Akai MPC1000 Sampler / Sequencer)..
my mpd24 and xr20 were around the same price combined as your mpk. i got rid of my fantomS because: 1. i needed the $ and space i could gain from getting rid of it, and 2. i'm a drummer, so the keyboard is pretty counter-intuitive for me. the pads aren't. i used to map everything to my pads on my fantom anyway and then fuck around on the keys for a while to get my basslines and shit. now i just do my basslines in FL if i don't straight up sample them, or i make them on my xr20. isn't the mpk basically like one of those little m-audio boards but with the awesome akai sequencing?
