anybody heard of these guys?

they're on sci's label and if u ask me this band carries the torch for good instrumental jamming and sci-like jams better than any of the other so called jam bands out there.

just went to see them the other night and they were fucking bumpin!

yea i know they've been around for a while but it seems like they've started getting bigger as some of these other bands have left the scene. i dunno, yea i hear ya tho i saw them in 05 too they were pretty good back then but i think theyve got better or changed their style of music to be more like sci and jam-oriented.

also their tickets are way too expensive, i was going to see a bassnecter/umphrees show (for the bassnecter of course) and it was like 120 bucks. for a 4 hours show TOTAL.

truth. a lot of rich frat boys can be found at these shows. umphrey's is alright i couldn't get into them much. if you want a good show/scene check out lotus

i dunno i guess my umphreys experiences have been better than yours duudes,

they arent as chill as some bands but they definately arent like the disco biscuits and shit.

u know actually its kinda weird when u think about it how frat people go to jam concerts and wear phish hats and shit- when i was younger the uncool stoner people went to those kinds of shows and the popular people liked gay ass music, i guess its nice at least that good music (ie jam bands) has gone somewhat more mainstream, but i feel the downside too.

I don't fuckin care who goes to a show. I'm there to enjoy my musics. Doesn't mean I wont laugh at idiots. But freal. I caught a lotta shit for douchebags being the majority at DMB shows...but fuckit, dude puts on a good show without fail every time. Enjoy yourself. Fuck the rest

Mayer is a talented dude. I'm sad to say I realized that after Chappelle show had him on and someone mentioned he was actually a real talented guitarist. Sure he's got a large contingent of shitty female fans, doesn't mean he's a bad dude.

Same thing with Matthews, pretty much solely douchebag fans but dude is actually good. I wrote him off for years and years and I'm pretty certain mentioned it in a thread I made about him, turns out I was indeed mistaken.

Gotta say the fans certainly do cast a negative light on certain artists. It's a shame because for the most part they can't help who follows them, sometimes yes but not always a controllable aspect unfortunately.

I only seen UM once. Trancegression, summer '07. Co-headlining with Disco. Loved the "DUMB" label on everything, it was dope.

I agree with what someone said early. Very esoteric group. I can't speak for the fans because I haven't been to enough shows, but I could agree, from an elitist suburban Chicago scene, drunken frat-boys, etc.

But for fucking real. Disco closed the first night, and I thought they threw down. Because they did. But UM closed the second night (this is a weekend festival, they been on tour a minute, at 9,000 ft above sea level at a ski resort up in a REAL alpine valley) and they fucking BLEW DISCO OUT THE DRINK. Hands down, no question.

Like, Disco had my attention that weekend, they're peeps were out in force at the beginning, but then Umphrey's folks started showing and representing and it was fucking ridiculous. UM, that night, some of the tightest musicianship I've seen since a Bela/Flecktones show five or six years ago.

They're different groups/styles. Can't get too hard into comparison if you're forgetting that. UM is nerdy, DB is for dancing.
