For someone who has never heard hip-hop/rap, i would go with something that wouldn't be to polarizing, such as Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon, it's modern, pop-rap, has solid production and the songs aren't too bad or too good....I would then expand out from there working into Kanye's works and from there to Jay-Z, then biggie/pac, then work out from there until reaching the classics...The desire to explore is the best gift you can teach someone about the arts...

^already dl'ed it

But I do like grieves philosophy, leave them wanting more.

At the same time there's some albums that might hit so well that it just pulls them right in.... This leads me to a new question, new thread.

Its true but we want answers not dancers

With that being said my immediate reaction was Low End Theory (or midnight marauders), and my secondary was Innercity Griots (yes i have a boner for freestyle fellowship lately).

Black on Both Sides - Mos Def
if we're talking compilations, 2pac's greatest hits.

Next up would be Kanye (College Dropout), Classified (Self Explanatory), and Ice Cube (pick one... Laugh now cry later, maybe?). Damn, those Tribe albums and Roots albums are all great too. Good question!

it's like this thread was made for you, slapstick! You realize all that and more is like a click away, right? No excuses in this day and age.

you are right and great point, trailer park moms were connecting with their children like they never had before...but he is too polarizing in my opinion to feed someone, its like playing Judas Priest to introduce rock instead of Led Zep...

People Under The Stairs - O.S.T.

i didn't give this a great deal of thought; more like a snap-decision for something mildly obscure and probably both overstated (in this thread, perhaps) and overlooked as an essential album. i'm not a huge hip-hop head. a lot of things popped into my head, most of them older aesthetics.

the Fugees - The Score is probably a safe one, too.

Hip-hop is rather diverse. It has a decent history to it, now, too. It'd be impossible to define everything it encompasses, represents, affects and draws on with a single album.

eh, what do i kno
