A lot of my friends like his earlier music.

My friend got his later album and said how he was trying too hard to be like the early grateful dead with layered harmonies.

My friends saw one of his shows and said he puts on a good performance.

I can stand some of his music like a few songs or listening to his music in someone's car but I don't want to hear it non-stop and I don't think I'd see one of his shows unless I was going with friends and it was say ~$20 or less and in a small venue or he was opening for someone.

i saw him in 2005 and he was hilarious. i think he was on drugs because he kept telling stories about drugs that weren't really appropriate for the audience at this festival.

I dig Ryan Adams a lot actually, at least his early albums, haven't listened past the first 3-4 or so. But they are some amazing albums and definitely a lot of amazing songs.

Which festival was it?

What was the audience like? Apparently he used to have a major drug problem with coke and heroin and performing high from what I've read about him in interviews.

it was the edmonton folk music festival in 2005. it is an all ages festival with massive variety in musical genres, but in general a family atmosphere (..everywhere except at the parties for volunteers). he definitely told stories about his junkie exgirlfriend and how they used to do heroin and cocaine all the time. the audience was pretty much shocked because nobody really expected him to be totally loaded during his set. he was removed from the stage before the official end of his set.
