Tab Sites
Which ones generally have the most accurate tabs? I find I can look up the same song and find several very different interpretations of the tune.

Ummm... I listen to the song and pick over the strings until it sounds right. Tabs kinda confuse me, and I'm too much of a lazy stoner to learn to read music.

Have a look at program called Guitar Pro.
It's a reasonably priced program that can really help you improve quite quickly. I know a lot of people (myself included) that benefit greatly from it, and ultimate-guitar.com regularly has new additions that are added in the GP format. It reads like tab, but there is so much more that it offers besides just that. |

That looks pretty badass. I just checked out the site. Tell me, do the WAV output files sound halfway decent?
I like the idea that you can have the software play the tab, so you know exactly how it will sound, or if it's even remotely close to what the song actually sounds like (there are widely different tabs for the same song, and I've got no real way to tell the difference. I want to keep focused on what I'm working on now, but maybe in a few weeks I'll download the trial version and give it a whirl. I don't really have $60 to spend tho, so if you know of any torrents that are reliable... Thanks HTAM ![]() The Rev |

911 tabs can give you a pretty good idea. your ears should fill in the missing/wrongly tabbed sections of each song

this is pretty much the advice you need most. fancy tab programs might seem cool, but they don't do much to teach about being a musician

Please excuse the 'authoritive' tone of my post...
Tab is not always wrong. It may just be transcribed in a different key, or in a different position on the guitar. To be fair though, I have seen many tabs over the years that are incorrectly notated as being played in D# as opposed to Eb. They are more of point of reference then anything else. Unless you have bought some licensed tab-chances are it's pretty accurate. There are heaps of tabs out there that are spot on, though. If you understand basic theory (scales, scale chords, and modes) that can take you so much further as a player. Unless you're playing the 'Jesus of Metal' and you don't need stupid shit like theory. Ultimate guitar is loaded with lessons that can help any player learn some basic fundamentals. A person who wants to play the guitar but turns away from even instrument theory let alone basic chord theory is no better off than someone who knows how to talk, but can't read or write-or spell. They might be able to play-but the writing process becomes tedious when you have to stop and explain what notes/chords you are playing-instead of calling the key or the chord. Worse, put them in a jam situation when someone is about to call a familiar song in a different key, and they are fucked. @Capt. GP is much more than a fancy tab program for me. It's a backing band and practice tool as well. ![]() I said 'Practice Tool' Last edited by HTAM; 03-27-2011 at 08:42 PM. |

yeah im with HTAM i use them as a point of reference more than a perfectly-rendered transcription of the music. sometimes when i play things by ear i'll get it all right except for one or two chords and its helpful to have tabs to go to for those situations.
basically use them to get chords, when it comes to transcribing actual guitar parts you should learn to figure out the melodies by yourself, and after awhile it becomes really easy
