bass help advice

ok i want to get an electric bass and start learning on it for a music project.

the project will take place in an environment of extreme conditions -temperature extremes, lots of corrosive dust, possible rough handling.

so i dont want to spend a lot on an instrument that might get thrashed. any suggestions on where to start?

also any general advice /tips for the bass beginner?

Find a Fender Squier Bass at a Pawn shop. Shouldn't be more than $150-less if you go Ebay.

Playing bass is like playing on piano wire....it will take some getting used to, and if you have smaller hands it will be challenging.

Good....the scales on guitar transpose to Bass.

Mostly as a bass player you would be playing root/relative notes to the chord that is being played and syncing with the BPM of the drummer, unless you are interested in a Chord/Jazz approach.

'Running with the Devil' from Van Halen. Check that out.

i like it.

just make sure like was said, that the neck isn't warped and the instrument is in playable shape. if all checks out, try to pay the lowest price possible

keep in mind that corrosive dust will fuck your strings good. bass strings are really expensive, but it might be wise to invest in a couple sets

Man that's cooool Capt.

I'm currently considering selling my bass and amp because of size and what not. I don't play it with people cause I can't lug it around so well.

My new thought, electric baritone ukulele played through the small watt Fender bullet reverb amp I currently own.... I figure that out to make for one funny addition to a jam.
Currently working on selling the bass. Although I love it... it's not the right time or size for my life right now.

yeah that ashbory thing is pretty interesting, but the wiki article says its not good for slappin.

im really wanting a daisy rock guitar, they come in short scale versions
Debutante Rock Candy Petite Short Scale Bass | Daisy Rock Guitars the Girl Guitar Company
which seems like it would be way easier to play

yeah, getting a shorter scale will erase the disadvantage of tiny hands. the ashbory is the shortest scale i have ever seen, and thus would be most awesome. i was also interested in the silicone strings. would be pretty weird and likely resistant to corrosion

^ Those uke basses are pretty cool. Not loud enough to play unplugged with another acoustic but plugged in has a great sound. Feels good. The strings are weird. You can't really bend on it, the strings kind of roll.

To the OP, I love my p bass, but it is a physically demanding instrument. I'd totally check out if there are any cheap ibanez's, they're a bit easier to play from what I remember.

-update-

i could never find a small scale bass i could afford so i have a borrowed epiphone.
my progress so far: i can play basic rock n roll bass lines going dun-dun-dun-dun on the root note in time with the drummer. now i am practicing slap/pop octaves but i cant do it clean yet. i will never be a technical bass player.
