John and Mitchie were gettin' kinda itchie
just to leave the folk music behind Zal and Denny workin' for a penny tryin' to get a fish on the line In a coffee house Sebastian sat and after every number they passed the hat McGuinn and McGuire just are gettin' higher in L.A. you know where that's at And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. Zallie said 'Denny, you know there aren't many who can sing a song the way that you do' (Let's go South) Denny said 'Zallie, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you' Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl) And after every number they passed the hat McGuinn and McGuire just are gettin' higher in L.A. you know where that's at And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. When Cass was a Sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore, But she changed her mind one day Standign on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike, Take her to New York right away When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps Call John and Zal, and that was the Mugwumps McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher but that's what they were aiming at And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. Mugwumps, hi-jumps, low slumps, big bumps, don't you work as hard as you play Drink-up, break-up, everything is shake-up Guess it had to be that way Sebastian and Zal formed the Spoonful Michelle, John and Denny gettin' very tuneful McGuinn and McGuire just are catchin' fire in L.A. you know where that's at And everybody's gettin' fast except Mama Cass. Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted, and Mitchie wants to go to the sea Cass can't make it, she says we'll have to fake it We knew she'd come eventually Greasin' on American Express card Tents, low rents, and keepin' out the heat's hard Duffy's good vibrations, and our imaginations, can't go on indefinitely And California Dreaming is becoming a reality.

The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day concert event held June 16 to June 18, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. Monterey was the first widely-promoted and heavily-attended rock festival, attracting an estimated 55,000 total attendees with to 90,000 people present at the event's peak at midnight on Sunday. It was notable as hosting the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who, as well as the first major public performances of Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. The Monterey Pop Festival embodied the themes of California as a focal point for the counterculture and is generally regarded as one of the beginnings of the "Summer of Love" in 1967.It also became the template for future music festivals, notably the Woodstock Festival two years later.
The Byrds were an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964.The band underwent multiple line-up changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (aka Jim McGuinn) remaining the sole consistent member until the group disbanded in 1973.Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial success of contemporaries like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones for a short period of time (1965--66), The Byrds are today considered by critics to be one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" is a song by the American rock band The Byrds, written by Jim McGuinn and Chris Hillman and included on their 1967 album, Younger Than Yesterday. The song was released as a single on January 9, 1967 and reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 but failed to chart in the United Kingdom. The song was inspired by the hype surrounding the creation of The Monkees, whose television series had recently debuted in America, launching the prefabricated band to international fame. The manufactured nature of the group caused Hillman and McGuinn to look upon the current state of the pop world with more than a little cynicism.Musically, one of the song's main hooks is provided by McGuinn's striking 12-string Rickenbacker guitar riff, while Hillman's driving bassline forms the core of the song.Hillman has stated that he composed the song's bass guitar part during a recording session for South African musician Hugh Masekela. The song also features the trumpet playing of Masakela, which represents the first use of brass on a Byrds' recording.

Barry McGuire
Phil 'Flip' Sloan's Dylanesque 'protest' song was originally turned down by The Byrds and The Turtles. McGuire's first take was a rough rehearsal ...

"Georgia on My Mind" is a song written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics). It is the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael.[1] However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named "Georgia". Carmichael's 1965 autobiography, Sometimes I Wonder, records the origin: a friend, saxophonist and bandleader Frankie Trumbauer, suggested: "Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia?' Nobody lost much writing about the South." Thus, the song is universally believed to have been written about the state.
The song was first recorded on September 15, 1930 in New York by Hoagy Carmichael and His Orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke on muted cornet and Hoagy Carmichael on vocals. The recording was part of Bix Beiderbecke's last recording session. The recording was released as Victor 23013 with "One Night in Havana". Frankie Trumbauer had the first major hit recording in 1931 when his recording made the top ten on the charts. Trumbauer had suggested that Carmichael compose the song. Another 1931 hit version was Mildred Bailey's vocal made with members of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra (Victor 22880). Ray Charles, a native of Georgia, recorded it in 1960 on the album The Genius Hits the Road. It became Georgia's state song in 1979. Inspired by this blues version, Willie Nelson introduced the song to country audiences in 1978 as a #1 Country/Western hit.
