i think depending on what type of hip hop you are trying to produce, you can basically use any music making software. i like making dance music and stuff and i use Reason4. i think FL studio, ableton, protools, logic, acid etc. there are a ton to choose from.
ive been using reason for a few years and ill admit it doesnt make mastering an easy process. reason doesnt have any graphic spectrum analyzers or anything so you kinda have to do all mixing by ear. kind of a pain in the ass, but i do love the synths on reason. you can make some pretty powerful and interesting sounds. also the samplers are also pretty nice, so that would probably be good for hip hop. id read about some of the programs i mentioned and pick whichever you hear the best things about. good luck

ppssshhhh. 1st of all, those are kinda hard to find, and 2nd, you can use one of the various midi controllers out there to control any of the music programs. you dont have to drop cash on hardware especially if you are just starting out. an mpc is gonna cost you

id say bare minimum to start youd want to buy some good drum samples. drums are extremely important, and if your drum sounds are shitty to begin with your productions will not be that great.

reason 4 - btjunkie
I'm using 4 and it works just fine. did you mean reason 5 ? most of those I've found of 5 are dual layer/blueray size. I'm downloading a copy of 5 for pc only...2.5 gig. http://btjunkie.org/search?q=reason+5 there are ways around dongles/license servers

If I was ever going to make/record/produce music in a serious manner, I wouldn't use a software program on my laptop at all.
I'd go analog. dare to be different.

Although I wouldn't consider hardware to be different, as most serious/career producers wouldn't consider going software only, I gets ya point. Analog rules in a big way! I am still piddling away trying to make music sound real on a p.c using cubase, various soft synths and a mouse. Hard work getting into it sometimes, I love going to mates and jamming away on drum machines and synths, makes it so much easier to come up with something good, but I find sequencing/finer editing much easier in cubase (I suppose that's what it's for!), so I am deffo aiming for a sort of deep nasty synths wired to my p.c situation when I can afford to, hopefully, someday! Till then it's mouse clicky minimal techno weirdness. In response to the op, I think the answers above are all good, my personal preference as stated is cubase and plug ins, favourites being Waldorf Attack, Halion, a Hammond organ vsti that I can't remember the name of, z3ta, monologue, A1 synth, and waveshell mastering package among other bits and bobs. This is because I learned this way, cubase can be a bit daunting to begin with and I was lucky I had a very experienced engineer show me the ropes, but it is the most versatile piece of accessible software when you get used to it. |
