Maybe he listens to mostly radio played hip hop..

I haven't heard many of these until they got posted. Of course it's not my favorite genre of music so that plays a part as well.

Cole is all over the radio and judging by Geenos post, so is Krit.

Still, if radio is all he listens to, he still deserves the Yao meme.

They never state artists on FM radio, maybe 1 out of 100 or I can't pay attention.

I'm sure I could recognize some songs.

Logic, aka Young Sinatra I guess.. dunno, just got turned on to him.

i heard the beat and thought oh lawddd... why he do dis

but i was pleasantly surprised, he kills it.

So he's got some fucking lyrics right, he can also make pretty good song for the radio and he can sing.

Man, Snow, I've been following your "hip hop" threads for so long and I have to say...I dunno man. I agree, this is rap...and it's kind of hip hop...but it all feels so generic and more or less just unconscious shallow bullshit that I feel gives true hip hop a real challenge when trying to move outside of this stereotype. I think you got a good bead on the genre, but most of the time every single video/song I click from your threads ends up sounding like the same Lil' Wayne remixed, recycled shit.

I'm not saying these guys can't rhyme or that the beats are aight, but the music is as hollow as drywall in a dilapidated home. It's just...not intelligent. And sometimes downright stupefying. Not saying it has to be mind blowing genius, but it should at least move beyond bitches, bases and bragging.

Observe just lyrical content:

Or:

Example Two:

Or:

There's just substance, something to learn from. I understand these guys can rhyme, but it seems that's all that needs to happen. It's one thing to be able rhyme, it's another thing to actually say something.

Anyway, to answer your original question, I most DEFINITELY think Hip Hop is, finally, moving back in the right direction. The weird thing is, it's exactly the opposite of what you posted that makes me think that. Maybe that's because I never listen to the radio to judge where hip hop is going. I dunno, strange times, my friend.

Anyway, maybe I'm missing something and you can show me what I keep glossing over with what you think is really a resurgence in true hip hop. Either way, to each his own and I'm not trying to come across as a dick, I'm just trying to understand what you think is so different and amazing about what you're digging, because all I get is the same shit I've been hearing for years now.

On that note....to sum it up better than I ever could (my whole argument in hip hop 3:43):

"I ain't sayin' it's wrong...I've just been hearing it for way too long..." - CE

honestly all i got from a one time quick read through, not lisltening to the anything you posted, was hiohop needs to be intelligent in order for it to be real hiphop.

It's more about how he prefers music with staying power than the music of the moment that goes in one ear and out the other without really doing anything positive for the listener...

Some people listen to feel good now and don't care as long as the beat bangs and the flow works...

Some people listen to feel good now and care about more than just the beat and how the words sound, they care about what the words mean...

Ego is almost on some KRIT "If it don't touch my soul, then I can't listen to it" kinda shit I think.

Thing is though, while we can all dig some super conscious backpacker type shit, not everything needs to be on that level. If you aren't catching any sort of improvement in the music of J Cole, or KRIT, or Action Bronson even when compared with what everyone was hyping 5 to 10 years ago you are missing the point. Either way the thread is "is hiphop moving in the right direction", not is it already there.

I hear what you are saying on the dudes that have a mean flow, but the lyrics aren't necessarily at such a level as they could be or for some aren't even really there. But even music like that seems to be a lot better than it was. Someone like ASAP Rocky for instance, while he may not be a technical lyricist by any means, raps over some really dope beats, and has an awesome flow, and one that switches up well. I'd certainly take that over the rap of the same kind that was around a few years back.

While there is still some ignorant shit out there, even a lot of that seems at least a little more clever than it has in the past couple years. And I've seen a lot more intelligent, talented dudes sneaking into the mainstream and/or blowing up than compared with years back when it was all just godawful. While it may not be full on, and certainly isn't fucking with the early 90's or anything, the scene is certainly a lot better than it was a few years back, and I'm definitely grateful for that.

I hear ya, and I agree. I just don't feel what snowmayne posts as evidence of that movement. The content feels just as empty...but perhaps you're right, I suppose when I listen to hip hop I do seek to almost learn something from it, rather than just hear some slightly more clever rhyming.

It all has its place though and you're totally on about Aesop, most of what he says is unintelligible. Although on the other hand, I really don't like Aesop either (but he does get my respect).

But you are right, hip hop is evolving in all directions...but I feel the stuff snow posts is really just the stragglers that are running to catch up to what is really happening just below the surface.

More or less. And I guess I'm wrong for trying to say one is better than the other. I just don't see the amazing talent in being able to do what has been happening in hip hop for years and years now, just a little bit more "clever." But the ability to also craft a message and weave it through the stanzas and beats...there's something so incredibly powerful at work there that they almost don't even feel like the same genre to me sometimes.

Anyway snowmayne, I'm sorry for sounding like I'm shitting on your style and taste, I guess I'm just fairly passionate about this, more so than I thought, and despite my efforts, I'm probably still coming across fairly pompous. So I'm going to leave it alone from here, since, as Grieves pointed out, it's really just a matter of taste, and I'm not some authority on hip hop.

P.S. The reason why Wayne is in this thread is I don't really see that much difference in what you posted to what Wayne spits...but perhaps I'm not giving it a fair listen.

Man if you can't find substance in Kendrick Lamar or Krit then you haven't even listened for a second.

Word.

Also, while what I said may apply to Aesop as well, I'm talking A$AP Rocky. I'm lazy and can't think of a particular song, but this dude...

Oh, right on. Good choice of Gibbs song. And Bronson of course. That Blue Chips tape gets better each time I hear it.

Since Ego brought him up

"Real G's move in silence like lasagna" is quite possibly not only the best line of all rap history, but the most intelligent thing ever said in human existance.
