is hiphop moving in the right direction finally?

I'd say we hit a bad patch of music in hiphop somewhere around mid 2000s and into the last part of the first decade. Is it changing though? I think so.

Kendrick Lamar
Schoolboy Q
J Cole
Los
ASAP
Hopsin
Tech N9ne (finally reaching a more mainstream status)
Big Krit
Odd Future
Freddie Gibbs
Danny Brown

These dudes seem to be moving music in the right direction. And inb4 the underground.. There will always be good music to find. I'm more so talking about the mainstream side of things now.

It will never switch back and go the right way man, hip hop is dead, mostly because all the dumbass kids aren't into the deep lyrics with a message and laid back beats man, they want it fast and heavy and easy to understand. Underground rap artists stay underground for that reason. Tech N9ne (only one I've heard of on that list) has been around forever, but you'll never hear him on the radio, because thats not what kids want to hear.

I'll have to give them a listen, always looking for new rap.

It's all about the Roots man.

It's nice to see Tech N9ne get some recognition. He tours my hometown regularly and has said he really likes it there. I just hope he won't stop coming now that he's getting famous.

Techs playing on BET now, and World Wide Choppers was a radio hit.

Every artist I listed goes against everything in your post.

Hah....Hip-hop isn't dead, it never was, and it never will be and I hate people that act like it is. If you think hip-hop is dead you need to pull your head out of your ass. Seriously, if you are "always" looking for new hip-hop there is no way you wouldn't have heard of the people on that list. Generally, when I hear people saying shit like that it's because they are completely disconnected from the scene and the genre as a whole and then proceed to go around and tell people that everything new sucks like a total hipster snob with absolutely no frame of reference.
Listen, when the market changes, good music moves back underground because there is no mainstream infrastructure to support it. This applies to all genres of music. It's a good thing. Music shouldn't be manipulated by white dudes in suits, and when the suits get distracted by a new market prospect they leave your fucking culture alone and fuck off.

With that said, there hasn't been a year without good hip-hop since the first record was scratched. If you're blind to that because you're too lazy to find it yourself, then you deserve top 40 hits all day.

Aids, I totally agree with the people on your list for the most part. It's exciting to see real music getting the respect it deserves. First time I heard Kendrick, Big K.R.I.T., Gibbs and all that I knew something good was happening. There is serious talent and creativity exploding out of hip-hop right now in a much more visible way than in the recent past.

I think a lot of that has to do with people finally realizing that its over for the big, old record labels and are finding different and more effective avenues for getting the music out to more people. Think about all the free music that people on that list have put out. They totally avoided the manipulation and consumer packaging of the major labels and everyone has benefited from it themselves included.

The integrity of hip-hop has always been intact you just don't always see it if your not looking. The hip-hop marketing model of the early 2000's that overshadowed so much else is simply going away. It's obviously still there to some degree, but somehow it seems to have much less of a pervasive influence. The small, independent labels with real talent have been chipping away at that influence since it began via free albums and mixtapes.

I seriously have to stop ranting now and do something productive. The end.

Seattle hip-hop, jazz-hop, jap-hop....

Those scenes are all alive, well and thriving...

I could name names, but I won't...What I will say though is that we now have an entire creative generation that was raised just as much on Run-DMC, Beasties, Wu-Tang, Eminem as their rock contemporaries...Tha t must have some kind of influence, the kind of widespread influence that means that each, town, scene, burb, burrough, has it's own take on the art form and isn't afraid to share it with the world...That is nothing but good and allows the genesis and evolution of something special...It has become less about what you have, and what you want to have and more about who you are and who you want to be, which always makes it easier to relate to...We are all individuals looking for a like minded voice, hip-hop in 2012 allows those who want to, that very opportunity...

I'm pretty happy with the hip hop scene last year. Stuff from ASAP, Krit, Common, Cool Kids, Cunninlynguists, Curren$y, Danny Brown, Elzhi, Fashawn, Immortal Technique, J Cole, Kendrick, Lupe (mixtape, not Lasers), Mobb Deep, Pharoahe Monch, Raekwon, Random Axe, Reks, The Roots, Saigon, Schoolboy Q, Smif-N-Wessun, Smoke DZA, Styles P, Talib, Wale, Watch the Throne and a few others I'm forgetting.

Looking back wow, so great. Then you also have Lil Wayne and the rest of Cash Money going strong still...

I love nerd-hop

Kanye kinda had a hand in fostering it, then Kid Cudi, and now Childish Gambino...Great production, by literate/smart dudes, and it moves the art off the street and into academia...

Yeah this totally has nothing to do with you being a well off white guy from the Cape. You clearly fall right into the demographic of the average hip-hop fan.
