I'm posting a Leonard Cohen album that I melted into the first time I sat back with a smoke, a coffee and a good set of headphones. Soo simple, and so rich.

That was a lot of years ago and it sounds just as good every time I push play.

Well, I think that depends on how someone interacts with music.

I think of musical elements or elements of any artistic piece as components.

So in art you may have things like:

Style/ medium
Techniques
Colours
Subject
Realistic/Abstract
Composition (etc)

In music you may have things like:

Instruments
Melody and structure
Lyrics
Vocals
Composition (Etc)

Someone may find certain components of a piece agreeable while they find others disagreeable-- yet still be able to "consume" the artistic product enjoyably. I think that's reasonable.
While art occupies the realm of personal opinion, it can be harder to "consume" something if you dislike more components than you like.

That's where I stand with Lana Del Ray.

I don't find her particular brand of music very compelling. I find more components that I dislike than I like. And yeah, I am definitely someone who places more value on lyrical content.

I contest that pop music deserves more scrutiny because pop culture is consumed on a mass scale and affects audiences to a larger degree than, say, local indie artists. Pop music has the ability to transform trends and inform generations.

But when it comes to someone like lana del ray, is she pop because of what's invested In her (like biebs, spears,, bsb) or is it because a lot of people value it?

Like manufactured salty fatty pop food like big macs or something that's just fucking plain delicious like fried chicken.

I genuinely don't know a damn thing about her.

I honestly didn't know that she was considered pop..

I figured she was a niche singer playing a character whom had some (moderate) success on the festival circuit.

I think for the context of this discussion, pop music is just meaning popular music. At least in the way reverie uses the word, her concern is tied in with how much exposure the music gets and thus the weight of influence it can have.

According to wiki, Lana's gone platinum several times over world wide, so I'm pretty sure that counts as being popular.

And I have to say Lily Allen between the two because I used to like this one song by hers about 8 years ago.

But I do not like Lily Allen lol

I don't know Lilly Allen either.

I've heard of her just like I'd heard of lana.

This conversation reminds me of a quote by the great Sir Charles Barkely "I am not a rolemodel. Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids"

I think there's a difference in critiquing someone as a person and someone's work.
The role model part is a whole other conversation, as aside from the art itself.

While I like lana, she is a socialite whos daddy threw a shit ton of money at the right people to make her as famous as she is now, shes not super talented or anything.

She got famous overnight because of money not talent.

I still like her music.
