WTF?? I didn't even know he died. I love STP!! 1 of my favorite bands!! OD?? What's the story? I missed this 1!!

Plush, Interstate Love Song, basically all their songs were great. DAMN!! He had the 2nd best voice of the Grunge Era (Layne Staley #1). What happened??

zoltron 12-09-2015 02:24 PM

I was just trying to find out some more info on his death & it said they were going to release the cause of death this Friday. He was found dead on his tour bus in his bunk. Died in his sleep or from enough dope to keep him unconscious...we'll find out more this Friday.

He did make a very cool quote about his time behind bars from violating his heroin possession charges. He said, "It's not me thinking less of myself...but thinking of myself less." That is a great line...might have to put that in my sig somehow.

Axl isn't even in the same league. 'Appetite For Destruction' was mindless noise. Just my opinion.

Guns N' Roses were more along the lines of Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera, etc.

Grunge was STP, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, etc.

Once again, just my opinion...remember this band? I kinda like this song...

Hell yeah I remember Garbage.

Version 2.0 was one of my first albums. I still listen to them, their most recent album Not Your Kind of People is awesome.

Personally I don't segregate these bands into genres though. It can be useful to categorize for ease of discussion I suppose, but those bands' sounds are pretty varied.

I mean Pearl Jam has often had a pretty heavy blues influence not found in AIC or STP for example. Also STP did a bunch of like.. 70s rivival sounding stuff. Soundgarden + AiC are pretty similar in a lot of ways, and all four exhibit the use of technical guitar solos at times, whereas a band like Nirvana never really did solos and have quite a different sound from those in general.

And then Garbage, by some considered grunge, had a lot of electronic sound in there and totally different vibe.

Guns n Roses was like a fusion between hair metal and more classic blues influenced rock, and the occasional thrash sensibility of old school metallica on some songs.

Grunge was almost more of a fashion sense with associated attitude than a true musical genre I think.

zoltron 12-12-2015 02:31 PM

/\/\/\/\ Yeah, you're right. I just couldn't stand the 80s 'Big Hair' bands & was floored the 1st time I saw 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' on MTV.

I remember seeing that video for the 1st time with my nephew & told him that rock & roll has been reborn...especially after the noisy metal bands that were around in the 1980s.

Canuck Wisdom 12-12-2015 02:46 PM

I think that ^ response, that you just described, is exactly why Nirvana did as well as they did.

The refreshing statement they made, rather than the music itself being amazing.

moketweed 12-13-2015 06:28 AM

My fave STP song is dead and bloated, I figured it's too soon for the video though...
