Unhappy 'Fifth Beatle' George Martin dies aged 90

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment....post.77725826

George Martin, often described as the "fifth Beatle", has died at the age of 90.

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr tweeted the news on Wednesday, saying "God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family love Ringo and Barbara George will be missed".

Sean Lennon, the son of John Lennon, also took to Twitter to say he was "gutted" by Martin's death.

A Universal spokesman confirmed Martin's death to The Hollywood Reporter, but the circumstances around his death are not yet clear.

In a music career of more than 60 years, Martin produced 30 number-one hit singles in the UK and a further 23 in the US.

Born in London, he signed the Beatles to their first label contract in 1962 and was involved with each of the group's original albums, earning him the moniker of the "fifth Beatle".

He also worked with stars like Elton John, Celine Dion, Kenny Rogers and Cheap Trick.

Martin's work earned him several accolades including six Grammy awards, the most recent coming in 2007, and two BRIT awards.

R.I.P. George Martin. I'm so gutted I don't have many words. Thinking of Judy and Giles and… https://t.co/3Nc8sCgRpN

He also worked in television and film, composing Shirley Bassey's the James Bond theme songs 'Goldfinger' and 'Live and Let Die'.
