I know nothing but i started seeds
So i'm a girl with ambition and not a lot of time but enough. Someone gave me a mother and some seeds. The mother has been topped and is growing in a Y shape about a foot and a half tall by a foot wide. (I can send pics if that helps). I tossed some of the seeds in some popcorn boxes i had drilled holes in and now they've sprouted indoors. I put them outside for a couple hours of sun each day so i can eventually condition them to being outside all the time. I have a few questions. How fast should they be growing? Am i doing anything wrong thus far? What types of nutrients should i use in the soil? When and how can i sex and young ones?
As i said pics available. |

We like pics.
While your seedlings are developing roots you have to be a little careful not to let them dry out or get scorched by the sun; once their root system is established you can leave them outside in direct sunlight. You have to wait until the flowering period to determine the sex of you seedlings. The vegetative part of a plants life cycle is where the plant focuses on growing- in nature this would be Summer, in an indoor set up summer is simulated by leaving the lights on 18 or more hrs per day. Flowering is triggered by a reduction of length of daylight to 12 or less (Autumn). Until a seedling has reached this stage it is very difficult to determine sex. Google cannabis sexing or similar to find example pics. If you have a mother plant you can take cuttings- these will be of known sex as they are clones of the original. You shouldn`t need to add nutrients to seedlings untill they establish a proper root system- they can`t cope with too rich a soil when they are small. What soil are you using? I assume you`ve planted the sprouts?

ok here are pics. There is a big girl in one of them i've had a little experience sexing them. Essentially balls bad legs good right? I have super thrived her back to life. She was a stringy yellowish green when i got here. I'm not sure if I should trim some of the surface leaves off or not or really what to cut and what not too. The seeds I started have sprouted and I was wondering what I can do to help them along. They've been growing for a couple weeks.
The whole last batch I started got eaten by a bunch of these little black bugs resembling fruit flies. Anything i can use to keep them away and out of my soil? They are infesting all of my starting containers. The containers stay inside in a tray of water to keep the ants out and to keep a relative water table for the babies to streach to. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks. |

well they are all looking very nice and the mothers lookin great so good job so far.
and if you allready have the mother you should just grow some clones mabey. your soil is lookin a little woodchippy and i heard that chicken poo is pretty hot for the plants, along with certain compost, BUT they are lookin fine so you might not even have to worry about this, just remember it. and i wouldnt worry about trimming anything. good job so far and GOOD LUCK!!!

let the seedlings drain
I'm not sure I would leave water in the bottom of the seedling tray. Standing water attracts bugs. Your local garden supply might have a type of rock or something else to deter the bugs. Also, once germinated the tiny root tip will need oxygen to thrive in addition to plenty of moisture. Allow the pots to drain and dry out just a bit before watering, just make sure it stays damp a few inches below the surface where the roots are. If they haven't germinated yet make sure the soil ALWAYS stays moist where the seed is. They look like they will be off to a good start. I just started too but pretty sure it's sound advice

Yep, keep the seedlings moist but not sodden.
I`ve had an infestation of annoying little flies that sound the same as yours. They lived in the soil. I think they came in with some manured horse shit I used in in a soil mix. I kept them under control with soap spray, eventually they died out. One has to be careful about introducing anything from outdoors as all kinds of critters can gain entry into the growspace that way. I think if one has a good composting technique and composts for a long time then the risks are reduced. Your momma plant looks fit and healthy. The seedlings don`t look too bad. In future for seedlings I`d just use the organic soil without the chicken poo/compost but maybe with perlite, vermiculite and or coco fibre to thin it a little. Less rich soils are better suited to little plants- as they grow and develop stronger root systems they can cope with more nutrients. Also perlite, vermiculite and coco all improve drainage which helps air get to the roots. If your plants are fit and healthy it will be easier to get rid of pests. When I had the annoying little flies I think other plant health issues had made it easy for them to get a foothold in my grow. I think I can see woodchip in your soil. These or any other uncomposted material can cause acidity as they rot down. This may not be a major issue but do be aware of the pH of soil and the water you use. In soil cannabis likes a pH of around 6 to 6.5. In hydro setups a slightly lower pH is considered ideal. Tap water is often quite alkaline. If pH strays too far from the ideal then the plant loses the ability to absorb certain nutrients and trace elements- this will cause issues. You can get pH test solution from a garden, aquarium or hydro store or use litmus paper or a pH meter.

i've got some organic oil that is a natural deterrant for many bugs, you may find something similar locally
or if soap spray doesn't work you could try pyrethrum, it's natural, but pretty nasty |

Great thanks.
I've removed the water tray to ward off mold and the bugs. I'm assuming a spray bottle with a light mixture of dish soap and water is what you mean giles? I have a new batch of seeds coming soon so I'll take your advice about the soil mixture. Thanks again.
I have more questions regarding cloning the mother and the up and coming change of seasons and how this will affect her outside, also about any ferts that i can use at this stage to make her all the more happy. Alas i'm at work and i've got to go. Ciao! |

Thanx everyone! Things are moving along and I've decided to move indoors with my endeavors. I will post pics later this week. I could use a lot of the care advice. I'm also interested in electrical hook up info so I can stay green and keep the power bill down. Ideas?

I would suggest a 400w HPS light if you have the room for it. The good thing about HPS is you can use MH bulbs in them but you CANNOT use HPS with a MH ballast. Run the MH during veg for like 16 on and 8 off and once you turn it to 12/12 change your bulb to the HPS for flowering.
