Ready to start growing. Need your advise

Hey guys,

I've been reading about growing the good herb for years. now l think its time l try. The goal here is to have personal weed with a little l can sell on the side. What l need from you is some advise. So here is the set up thus far.

3 HPS ballasts 150w (16000 lum)
2 Grow areas (side by side closet) first closet(5X3.8X8) 2nd(4X3.8X8)
Located in a basement with ventilation available

Given the size of the room and the 3 ballasts how many plants do you think l should grow? any ball park idea how much harvest I would get?

Is there a growing method that would best suit the area l have? ie hydro, soil ect.

l'm reading the Cannabis Growers Bible right now and I've checked out alot of aritcles on the form but would love some feedback from the community.

Thanks

I'd say starting out put your hps away until you begin flowering, or a bit into veg.(You'll fry your babies) Use any sort of fluorescent to start your seedlings. for veg the general rule is 1000 lumens a plant so stick to that. As well, during veg you want to use a bulb with a vegging light spectrum, so no soft whites. 6500k is good.

I'd say since it's your first grow start out with soil. But dont cheap out make sure to get something good, i recommend the cookie cutter foxfarm soils. Theyre pricey but certain brands such as ocean forest can carry your plant through to harvest without a single feeding.

Update us.

Had good results with Canna CoCo.......pricy though! So.......soil would be my 2nd choice~ We've got soil recipes posted....want the link??

How may plants?? Depends alot on how long u plan on vegging! Let's say 8-10, to be on the safe side.

How humid is the basement?? I know of one that is so humid that wood furniture molds in less than a month.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the heads up guys. I'm thinking maybe 5 plants should do just in case I happen to loose one or two down the road. I don't have a veg light and l'm not sure what it is. I've researched MV and HPS lights ect and the general consensus is the HPS is better but the MV light is good for the first stage. I'm trying to keep costs low as I was given the HPS ballasts to start. Would the HPS lights at a higher (heh heh) distance still work?

I'll also look into the cookie cutter foxfarm soil. not sure if they have it here in canada tho.

The basement is ubber dry. I live near the rockey mountains in canada so I'm 3000 ft from sea level. VERY dry conditions here. Average temp down there is like 60-65. I'm thinking the ballasts will keep things warm around 75-80.

Thanks again guys!

They do have foxfarm in canada. And i really do recommend any of their products, the term cookie cutter in FF's case is a good thing. The problem with mixing your own soil is the difference in everyones topsoil depending on their area which in any potting mix will be the bulk of the mix. so you will end up with a different product no matter how on the mark you are with measurements.

On your light situation i tend to be a little bias towards cfl just because i personally use them for veg. But you can use an hps if necessary. I'd use MH if its a possibility for you. otherwise your plants really wont need too much lumen output untill theyre a little older, HPS may be a bit of a waste untill a month or so into veg. But if it is cost effective for you then use the hps, just make sure its high off your plants..like easily 3 feet.

But if you're doin it get started asap, if you start today you'd prolly be finishing sometime in feb so the earlier the better. And contact me further for any more info on where to find foxfarm.

Hps is good for both vegging and flowering. After the seedling stage you can keep those 150's within 6 inches of your canopy as long as you have a fan between the two. You have a lot of grow space. You might want to section the closets so you could have a section for seedlings, vegging and flowering.

Yeah l think l'll stick with the HPS as l already have them in my hands. The area l'm working with will be split into two sections. 2 lights will go in the main closet and one light will go in the smaller closet. The big closet will be the flowering room with the smaller will be for the germin/veg room.

People have mentioned that l need 10000 Lum for each plant. My lighting output is 16000per ballast. Its really not worth grown just 4 plants. Any idea on how many plants will work best with the Lum that l'm working with?

I think you should be looking at lumens per square foot of your growing area. Seedlings, plants in veg and plants in flower need different lumens per sq footage, ideally. Google "lumens per square foot" and a shitload of stuff will come up about growing the good weed.
