From what I have read, plants that are stressed have a much greater chance of becoming hermies. If one wanted to intentionally make a hermie, what would be the best/easiest way to do it?

Messing with the light cycle is the easiest- ie putting the lights on during the middle of the dark period during flowering.

You could leave a female in flower way longer than normal.

It`s pretty easy really, a female plant flowering without any males will want to herm anyway, really the tricky part is stopping them.

Why do you want hermies, are you looking to make feminised seeds?

Are you saying that in the middle of flowering, I should begin leaving the lights on 24/7? Or, are you saying to only turn the lights on for a short period of time when it is supposed to be off? (Hope that question made sense!!)

That's what I had in mind. This is Northern Lights from Nirvana. I've tried to access their site. But, constantly get error messages, or messages that say I don't have permission to view those pages. I don't know what is going on there. Anyway, I'd like to get fem. seeds from this lady. It is my understanding that when a plant hermies, the seed will come true to the plant that they came from. In this case, (if I was told correctly) a hermie Northern Lights should produce fem. seed that will come true to the Northern Lights.

One more question.... was I told right about plants grown from the seeds from a hermie plant will come true to the original plant?? Or, was I fed a line of... well,.... trying to be nice here....... crap?

Either will work. Even exposed to light for just a fraction of a second during the middle of the lights off period mj can herm if used to a 12hr on 12hr off light schedule.

A hermie is a female plant exhibiting male characteristics - most importantly for our discussion producing pollen. However it still has female DNA. So a female plant crossed with a female plant should only have female genes to choose from, resulting in female offspring. Those offspring have arisen as a result of hermaphrodism so may be susceptible to hermaphrodism themselves. This isn`t viewed as a good trait as most people grow to make sensi (unseeded weed).

The offspring of a selfed plant or a plant crossed with a sibling may well be similar to the parents, or not in some cases, it depends on the genetics involved. In the case of a selfed plant recessive genes can come forward resulting in different (usually poorer, lol) characteristics.

I dunno if Nirvana's (or did you mean you were buying NL from Gypsy Nirvana seedbank?) NL is supposed to be an inbred line (IBL), if it is it should be pretty stable.

Another option you could take is to grow a packet of seeds, see which is the best for you (ie female, vigorous, good producer or whatever) and clone it. You can keep making clones of the clones pretty much indefinitely so you don`t need seeds after the first pack. This may well reduce the risk of hermaphrodism.

For your purposes selfing (crossing a plant with itself) shouldn't be necessary with an IBL, a male and female from the same pack of seeds should give similar offspring, just not feminised.

Farmergiles, I was referring to Nirvana, not Gypsy Nirvana. At the time I ordered seeds, I did not know about Gypsy Nirvana. But, thanks to you, I now know about them and have them bookmarked!!! It is my understanding that the NL that I bought is an IBL.

I would love to be able to clone this girl. But, I am afraid that I don't have enough space to do so. And, I'm afraid it's tool late to do that. In her top, she has produced hairs and the very beginnings of bud clusters. There are no signs of flowering on the lowest branches. If I were to get a clone from one of the lowest branches, won't it go immediately into flowering instead of vegging first? If so, that's bad too, right?

no its not too late to take a few cuttings. they will want to keep flowering for few weeks but will eventually go back to veg under 24 light.

i have had herms and planted the seeds and all the offspring also came out herm, it was not a good thing

Thanks, v3d4. I guess I'll try a couple of cuttings. As limited as my grow space is and as limited as my budget is right now, I don't know for sure what I will do with them for 24/7 light while my girl is flowering. But, I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks again!
