mold help

i recently received a seedling as a gift from a friend. i have had the seedling under a 200 watt cfl for a few days now and it's doing great, until today that is. I noticed it has what appears to be a white mold on top of the soil. I have never seen this before and i'm not quite sure what to do about it. I'm guessing the best thing to do would to to transplant it into different soil. I"m not sure what soil it is in now because i didnt ask but i'm wanting to switch to fox farms ocean if the local hydro shop ever gets in back in stock.

does anyone know what this mold could be? how would i go about getting rid of all the old dirt and mold without harming the seedling roots? i can take some pics when my roommate gets up so i can use his camera.

gently one can put plant into another medium....we love pics btw~

we've got a thread called 'Give us your soil recipe......~' in case you're interested at giving it a look.

that white build up on the soil could also be calcium deposits....or mold, none the less you can get her into a better living condition.

If they are root bound, let a few of the figures in the fist of the roots go, lightly get a few fray roots pointing out. Then transplant.

If you can perhaps take off a TINY skiff of soil off the top and see if the white comes back. Second thought, that is some chunky soil, Maybe just take off some of the wood white chunks. ie. the ones closest to 'our' edge of the cup in the pic.

Good luck.
