How tall is the best height to flower your plants

I'm vegging again... Which is always fun... I've read the light charts but I still am not sure at about what height to flower the plants... Or even if I should force flower and just cram as many in as can fit with room to circulate... I vegged my last plants for I feel way way to long as there was the beginings of powder mold on some of the very lowest leaves... Where the buds were just a couple of hairs they ended up about 4' off of the ground...3' without the little stilts so...
does a more mature plant and root system produce stinger better thc? Should I grow them longer and cut back some of the stems? Or is it better to flower when they are about a foot and a half tall? Or is it better to just force flower a tray of clones and make each one have on main cola?
I rambled sorry any advice apreciated?

Depends on lighting and genetics.

Lighting- the useful range of light from a 400w HID is about 18" so there isn't much point in having plants much higher than that. With 600w probably about 2', 1000w around 2.5 feet.
Of course you can always veg long time and train the canopy out sideways while still keeping the height low.

Genetics- how much will the plant stretch? If you are growing a hazy sativa you may well want to put rooted clones straight into flower as they will probably stretch 3 or 4 feet anyway. If you are growing squat indicas they may hardly stretch at all so some vegging will be necessary for a good harvest.

i like keeping my plants bushy and short. Like FG said, you have better light penetration. Plus this way you avoid having height issues in the middle of flowering (that sucks). Who wants to chop the top of a plant in late flowering...?

personally i top at least once during veging and then train with some cool stuff called bendz. "Training for dummies"

when certain phenos of a strain grow abnormally tall, i elevate the shorter plants with books (underneath the pots), so their colas are all in the same height from the light.
Or i put some more "bendz" in their branches.
