SEX question
I know im probly stupid for asking but i have two very larg female african kush plants and i want to turn one of the clones into a male so i can polinate before i over clone it. I have read something about doing it with artifital hormones and that you can stress a female into a male. but i want to know how. And if it is even possible.

I want to take a first generation female clone and turn it into a male so i can pollinate a first generation clone from a different mother. Both females are African Kush and i need some seed stock as two mothers just isnt going to cut it in the long term.

Oh, I would also like to know the answer to this question, I'm guessing you just have to grow enough and stress them with light periods to make one go hermie till you get a good seed that is male. That's my guess.

ok Both of the females i have now are seed grown mothers. i will be cloneing both of them. I want to make one of the clones into a male so that i can have the seeds cause that is just a good thing to have on hand. i only want one male i can flower that for pollen repeatedly. I intend to clone the females for buds but i want atleast one plant with seeds so i can replant in the event something horribly wrong happens to my garden.
and one more question that i had is if i stress one into a hermi and then clone just the male branch will it be a male or will it be another hermi Last edited by godneal; 04-13-2010 at 10:18 PM. |

a clone by definition has the exact genetic composition of the mother, ie the same sex. so if you're cloning a female youre going to get female clones(thats why people clone instead of continaully breeding). to produce males you will need a male to pollinate one of your females and then some chance will decide how many seeds are male and how many are female. as far as i know, im sure someone with extensive knowledge on herb growing can answer more difinitively.

i have found material on being able to stress them into growing male branches and if i took and stressed a male branch and cloned it would that cloned male branch become a male or just a hermi.

im not sure about the process of stressing into herm-ism so i dont really know.
maybe it would be better to just get some seeds and start messing with some strains that you're not as attached to? PS i dont think its possible to over clone a plant, i could be wrong.

well that is where one of my problems is as we just legalized medical smoke seeds tend to get seized in transit and availability of quality strains is very very very restricted and im actually rather lucky to have gotten the 8 seeds i did and 6 of them were duds and 2 are females so its not a matter of attachment at all i wish it was cause i would grow another good strain with pleasure i would diversify. and as for over cloning i want the seed stock so that i can both have an emergency back up in the event of a grow catastrophe and to spread them in the area to other growers.

If stressed a female plant may well turn hermaphrodite and show male flowers.
If self pollinated or if the pollen is used on another female the seeds produced should give only female offspring although they may inherit hermaphrodism. I believe professional producers of femmed seeds use a foliar application of silver thiosulphate to stress the plant but you can probably do this more easily by messing with the light cycle rather than using chemicals- ie when they are on a 12hr lights on 12 hr lights off cycle, switch the lights on in the middle of the dark period. Personally I'd just propagate your plants by cloning them. If you produce seeds they may not be exact copies of the parent(s).
