Fuzzy/hairy germination?

Got some seeds and germinated via wet towel.
After one noght of putting them in the towel they had gone kinda hairy, fuzzy, and obviously hadn't opened up yet (it was only one night).

But now, a good few days later, 8 out of 11 of them germinated, nice long shoots (one had already a big of the stem), but the shoots are also fuzzy with white hairy crap.
So they seemed to have grown with the fuzziness, so I don't think it's mould (at least not dangerous to the plants)...

Anyone know about this, what I should do etc...
For now I'm just going to grow them as normal.

PS. One of my other plants, almost 4 weeks old had two of its small bottom leaves shrivel up and die..I heard this is normal so I'm not too worried, should I be?

Attatched is a picture of one of the hairy seedlings...sorry for low quality, was done with a phone camera

That white hairy crap is essential to your plant's life! Don't slag it off like that.

The roots need a large surface area to absorb water, nutrients and oxygen. Also to control the micro organisms in the soil.

Yes it is normal for the first set of leaves to shrivel away eventually.

those are the root hairs! like giles said, they increase surface area for nutrient/ water uptake.

Yeah you are right, the onset of mould can look almost identical.

I think there is a lot of micro bacterial action going on around a healthy root.

I don't do the paper towel germination any more.
Germinating right in the soil, 3/4 to an inch deep in saturated soil (covered and in the dark)...takes two days

Instead this year my policy is to Overgrow.

To date, I have around thirty plants altogether. Some in the woods, some in a friends garden...on my fire escape
(another twenty "sprouts" in my kitchen)

Tallest is two weeks old and about 12 inches .

All will be grown outdoors in full natural sunlight.
so sorry , no photos.
