Hello all, as the title says I need some help determining what exactly is the prob with two of my plants. I'm growing outdoors, in pots, planted 1 month ago. All except for 1 seemed to be showing the beginnings of a nitrogen deficiency. Yesterday I added a little N-P-K fertilizer and watered.
When I woke up today and checked on them 2 are having a reaction, while the rest appear to be fine. The 2 in question have leaves with what I think are big necrotic blotches, a few of the leaves are folding up, and curling in on themselves. One of the leaf tips is curled up, some are curled down, and the affected leaves also have smaller brownish white spots. This is all happening on the middle leaves, while the oldest, and newest growth is so far unaffected. I have Jorge's book, and I've read it cover to cover at least 6 times, I read the sticky's on this website, and my only guess is it could be a possible potassium deficiency. However from all the info I have the leaves aren't showing signs of any 1 particular problem, but signs of multiple problems. I'm confused by this, and also by the rapid onset of these signs, they've appeared in less than 24 hours. Any and all help would be much appreciated! |

Nutrient Deficiency Chart
Sounds like you do have a myriad of problems which you should treat accordingly.

They could do with potting up to bigger pots for starters- they may well be rootbound which will cause all sorts of problems.
The pots look too small anyway (unless that's just perspective). What soil are you using? The wilting on some of the leaf ends might be over watering. I'm not sure what's going on here (pic)- has that leaf been stripped underneath or are those patches chlorosis? Are those specks dust or mites? Have a careful look under the leaves for pestiferous critters. If you find anything spray them with soap solution (dish soap is fine). Edit- have you any pics which show a whole plant?

Yeah, I will be transplanting them to bigger pots this week, all of them are in 6 inch pots, except the one in the first two pictures, which is in a roughly 4 inch size pot.
The soil is miracle grow potting soil. It could be over watering, this soil has been holding moisture well despite the high temperatures, though some of that is due to the high humidity of the area I live in. I've been holding back on watering, but like I said I watered them yesterday to fertilize. That leaf has not been stripped, so I would say it's chlorosis. Those specs are just dust, and sand particles. I live on an island on the coast so sand tends to accumulate. I check for insects daily, and so far have yet to find anything of concern. Spiders seem to enjoy taking up residence on my plants, and there's an abundance of predatory wasps in the area so that helps I'm sure. What is most confusing to me is how rapidly this occurred, yesterday these two plants were fine, though a little pale. It leads me to believe it was something I did, but like I said in the first post all I did was add a little N-P-K fertilizer and watered. I can take a picture of the whole plant, one of the sick ones I assume? |

Pics of any or all of them
.People seem to have problems with miracle gro sometimes, seems the ferts in it are quite harsh. Maybe the soil and your ferts combined badly. Some miracle gro has water retention crystals which don't work well for mj, good drainage is the thing you want. But if they are big for their pots then any problems will be magnified and tend to happen quickly.

If you're deadset on Miracle Gro, the straight potting soil mix is the best.
I used it on my first grow, got a decent plant but I think I screwed up the curing process that time and it turned out tasting awful. So if you're gonna use it make sure to cure properly.

No I'm not determined to use that soil, I only want whats best for the plants. I'll switch to something more healthy.
My next question I guess is if these plants seem severely affected, or if it's more a minor problem that once identified can be easily dealt with, with not much of an impact on the overall health of the plant? |

The second, they still look pretty healthy IMO.
They have maybe stretched a little. A bit more light and a gentle breeze will help with that. When you re pot you can bury the stems a bit deeper if you like.

That's good news. So basically at this point all I should do is transplant to bigger pots, and switch soil?
They are all pretty stretched out. Breeze is definitely not a prob, they get plenty of that. The days are averaging in the mid 90's, and the sun is intense. One of the plants has some minor sun damage on one of it's leaves. I figured it would help to keep them partly shaded most of the day. And thank you for all your input thus far, I'm very much appreciative. Last edited by octopootie; 07-26-2010 at 12:03 PM. |

I found a retailer close enough that sells fox farm products, so tomorrow I'll be making the journey to get ocean forest. Now am I gonna have to add anything like perlite? And should I still be fertilizing it? Or is it good enough to last until harvest?
Also what size containers should I be looking to get. Would 3 gallon containers be sufficient enough? |

Thats what I saw too. Maybe try watering right before or right after a lights on cycle.

They're outdoors.
But yeah it's not a good idea to water when the sun is blazing down.
