Chemical burn?
These are 2 of the plants from my current (and first) grow. I'm assuming this is a chemical burn, but not %100. I bought potting soil with the least amount of nutrients in it (NPK was .07%/.01%/.03%. I haven't fed the plants anything aside from tap water. My PH is around 7.5. Every now and then I spray soapy water on the leaves and on the pots to keep bugs off, but I don't think little amounts of dish soap would wither a plant like this. What do you guys think?
![]() ![]() This is bag seed, so the harvest isnt a huge deal to me. I just bought a bunch of northern lights seeds from attitude, and I was to make sure this isnt a soil problem before I plant them.

They arn't burnt, they are unable to take up nutes.
What watering schedule are you following? When you say your pH is 7.5 do you mean your water? 7.5 pH is a little high in that case. It can be lowered with store bought pH adjuster or citric acid or vinegar (mallic acid I think) seems to work pretty good. How are you measuring pH? The pots are quite big for the size of plant. Perhaps the soil is sitting stagnant with water in it and the pH is too high to allow nitrogen uptake. More info would help. What is the soil? You might as well try to sort out issues on this run before you plant the NL. Are you letting the water stand for 24hrs or so before watering? This allows chlorine to evaporate and will improve plant health.

I water every other day.
Referring to PH, that is what my soil is reading. I'm using a PH meter. I fill up a clean milk jug with water from the tap as needed, but store it capped. I put them in big pots because their roots are considerably long and outgrew the cups I had them in. When they were in the cups I tried adding coffee to the soil but it didn't do much. I have some plant food but I'm afraid to add it this early since I'm using enriched soil. Do I need to just bring the PH down or treat my water?

I skimmed the canni-bible and it seems I need to drop my PH a bit. I can't get PH down around here so I'll probably need to use vinegar. How much do I need? I mix my water up by the galon.

A guy I work with use to grow here, and he said he had countless problems with PH because the local water is shit. I'm goin to walmart when I get off and buying a bunch of distilled stuff. I'll add a bit of lemon juice to the mix just for good measure.

I can't give you a definite amount of vinegar or lemon juice to use as it depends on your water. Vinegar seems to suit the plants better than lemon juice.
I'd be wary of using coffee, it has all kinds of stuff in. Don't go more than a couple of drops of malt vinegar per gallon unless you can check the pH of the water as you go. If you can check it, cool, adjust it to between 6 and 6.5. Although it is instructive to check the soil pH it is difficult to directly alter it without repotting. I'd worry more about the pH of the water as you can change this easily. You say you keep the water in a milk can GL? Keep the lid open a tad- this lets the chlorine evaporate. Distilled water is good. It's good if you can aerate the water. Roots like air. Which is the problem (roots and lack of air) I suspect. Try watering in a cyclical way. Let them get- not dried out but dry enough so that the pot feels lighter. Then give them a thorough watering. Repeat. Checking by the weight of the pot is the easiest way to judge when to water. They could go a few days at a time between waterings and be fine in those size pots. If the soil sits stagnant with water the soil pH may fluctuate, but even worse the roots suffocate and the plant can't take up nutrients properly. Maybe some perlite in the soil would have helped. What kind of soil is it?

Its Scott's premium potting soil.
Scotts Premium Potting Soil - Scotts Miracle-Gro I ran out of scotts during this grow but i picked up some Miracle Grow Organic soil for the next one. How do I aerate the water? Don't you mean the soil? Wouldn't that just consist of poking holes in the soil?

The usual way of aerating water is to use an airstone like in a fish tank.
That Scott's soil might be ok but they don't really say what is in it. Although the npk numbers are low it says something about "food for 4 months growth" which is probably more nutes than are needed at first. So I'm not sure. Anyone else used Scott's? I could never get on with miracle grow soil. If you want something that will just work, get a soil mix from a hydro store. Foxfarms is a brand that gets mentioned (though we don't get it where I am) but most brands are ok tbh. But anyway, I suspect watering is the main issue. Try the cyclical watering thing. Also in future you might try potting them up more gradually(sorry, bad use of english ). As a rough guide, during seedling & veg stage the roots need a similar volume of soil to the volume the rest of the plant occupies above ground.

get one of those PH pens, trust me the PH needs to be checked, i was told those soil PH testers are Sh!t. i guess, they only cost 9 bucks so id go with the pen. think of all that money you will spend on distilled water. each gallon is what 1.19....... multiplied by how many waterings........... and a dropper, you get at walgreens. so you can drop in vinegar and take readings. just remember how much vinegar/water you have so you only have to check it once, not a couple times
ph pen items - Get great deals on Home Garden, Pet Supplies items on eBay.com! i had it open so i searched it real quick, makes it easier!! |
