Different types have different strengths.
CFL's are easy to use and can be had from any diy type store. MH will produce explosive veg growth and limit stretch. Sodium will give the greatest yield in flowering. LED's are very efficient (albeit maybe only as supplemental lighting atm). IMO CFLs for clones, seedlings and veg (although I'd like to use MH for veg), sodium for flowering. You can veg with a sodium bulb (the dual spectrum thing is limited in the bluer frequencies albeit less so than a regular sodium bulb) but your plants may tend to stretch.

Dont CFL bulbs have the greatest variation in the spectrum of light produced or something like that? the only problem is that the light or lumes or w.e Dissipates very quickly over a small distance so you gotta keep them very close?
something like that i think... Ive allways wondered why people dont hit the plant with all types of light at once, trying to mimic the sun as best as possible. Id imagine an awesome grow would result in using CFLs, MH, HPS, LED, and mabey even tossing in some UV bulbs and all that jazz... Also mabey using the HPS moreso in flowering for that spectrum.. Anyone got any links for grow ops like this? If i had the money and space this would be getting done no doubt... alot of people have the resources yet i never see this being done. They usually just choose between MH or HPS for the big grows, or use MH for veg then HPS for flower. I say buy one of everything and go all out...

the best all around??? well if price is no object get them leds baby!
led grow lights -Sunshine Systems ^^fuckin best lights ever cream my pants good. 300w worth of LED's is equivalent to 1000w hps/ mh. that's 80% more efficient, they also 80% more expensive. JIZZED IN MY PANTS... they make 2000w LED equivalents too nowdays. seen some the other day.

The blue part of the spectrum is not as pronounced as with a (solely) MH bulb but the dual spectrum will help slow stretch compared to a regular sodium. They (dual spectrum) also put out a few more lumens. If you are using 1 bulb all the way, in the initial stages the bulb is going to be way too big so you will waste a lot of light. That's why I said cfls (or flouro strip lights like T5's as well) for the initial stages.

yes and they give off the perfect wavelengths of light for photosynthesis. i saw a grow room a few days ago fitted with 6 2000w equivalent LED panels everywhere, the room was fucking huge and so were the plants.
these are amazing grow lights, i have seen them at the national garden wholesale chain stores in my area that carry sunshine systems lights. go see them for yourself, they really are magnificent. find the closest store to you: National Garden Wholesale : Contact

You've got me intrigued man. They really aren't that pricey. Their 90w that is equivalant to a 400 hps is less than $300. I paid $450 for my air-cooled 400hps. And only $139 for a 250 hps equivalant isn't bad at all. the $1000 for their 300w is pretty steep but the savings on electricity and the lesser need for fans would pay off in the long run. Fuck it, I'm going to give it a try.
