The germination thread

I closed it for continuity.

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Straight into soil with a tad of rhizotonic or whatever it's called (root stimulant) and under flouro's 24/7 for me (edit- not right under the lights but in the cabinet). Get 90%+ success with viable seeds. In fact I'm really pissed to lose a seed.

Every time I germ, I drop 10 or so seeds into deionized, dechlorinated water. I put the container in a nice dark place (usually a cupboard) and check it every day. As each seed begins to put out a rootlet, I plant them in my soil mix, about 1/4 inch in. I put em under 3 24 watt CFLs to provide nice, strong, cool lighting, and up it from there. I usually have a 70-80% success rate with good seeds. Mines usually bagseed though, so I think thats a pretty good average.

1 seed in a glass of distilled water, cover with a black sock stretched over glass, put brown paper bag over sock, put in warm dark place(pussy?) for 48 hours without any interruption and you'll have a tail.

Germing in soil seems to take longer- I only get worried after a week- but the germ rate seems fine. Although it takes longer, the next stage (the first pot up) is already accomplished.

I decided soil was the way to go after reading Koshiva's FAQ entry on germing.

i haven't grown weed yet but i have always done as farmergiles when growing anything. some types of seeds take longer than others but in general i would say my averages are high.

sometimes seeds are bunk. there's no technique to magically make them grow. if it doesnt work this way it probably won't in any other

Do you saturate your soil beforehand?

Yeah I do water beforehand, maybe not totally saturated.

If you water for the first time after placing the seed then it is easy to displace the seed so it is too deep or something.

a few times i have soaked seeds in room temp water for a day or two before putting them into soil, just to soften them up a little to get em going. it seemed to work pretty well

yo farmer i have been wondering about root stimulants.

i have a bottle of rooting hormone for cloning with an active ingredient of indole-3-butyric acid .1%.

what is the active ingredient in Rhizotonic? Can i use my rooting hormone powder to stimulate root development with seedlings or is this a huge no-no?

i want a root stimulator for sure.

thanks man!

from canna's website

Quote:
RHIZOTONIC adds ... microbiological substances.... Various trace elements and vitamins such as B1&B2..... hormone Oligosaccharide...
It's not the same as rooting hormones for cloning. I don't know if rooting hormones would help or not, it seems logical they might but I haven't tried it.

Rhizotonic seems to help a little with getting the microbes going in the soil, there are other products which do the same thing equally well I'm sure. I got by fine before I started using it, I wouldn't put it on a list of essentials.

Also stoneric was asking about watering the soil beforehand- this helps give the microbes a chance to get going.

Now what's the name of those friendly bacteria? Mycorrhizae (I think that's the right spelling).

FG, are you sure you aren't sureshot?
He liked the Rhizotonic for germing as well. Hmmmm

Well, we finally realize there is more than one way to skin a cat... or germ a seed?
So everyone that has a different way take some pictures, write it out and add it to the thread and cover all our bases?
It's all about the information.

Okay here's some information of what NOT to do (yes what I foolishly just did):
i soaked my seeds in warm 75 deg (F) water until all but 2 sank. they started to take on a blackish, 'bruised' look as soon as i started to soak them.

then i had 2 paper towels with beans between them on a saucer wrapped in plastic wrap in a light tight fire safe.

and like an idiot i accidentally fell asleep with the heating pad on high under my saucer! Fuck.

it must have been 90 deg in there for like 6 hours until i woke up and went to look inside the safe for root tips. to my unpleasant surprise there were no roots. they looked okay, just okay, though blacker than they were after the soaking.

what do you think? am i in trouble?

they are now in the safe without the heating blanket and i'm just going to give them time instead of temperature now. One of them has popped but instead of a root poking out it feels like plastic. On the side of the seed it is just a 100% transparent bulge of about 1 millimeter.

Never seen this before but i'm pretty sure i'm fucked.
