Unhappy seedlings drying out whilst in work?help needed

hya this is it-its my 1st grow with hps(used cfls before)got 13 random fem seedlings 2wks old and doin well 2nd set of proper leaves out-got em in 3 inch pots-on 18 hours cycle-ive got my 600w 2 feet above em theyre thriving-just drying out really quickly-im thought of raising my light but am concerned bout stretching so ive got em sitting in a large meat tray but ive read its bad to have em sitting in water?im considering potting in to larger pots early so theyve more soil for water retention-im proper stuck folks-any advice eagerly awaited-thanks jed

What's the temperature? How often do you have to water them? If you have to water them more than once a day I would consider potting up.

Yes, having the pots sitting in water can cause root rot.

600w is a bit wasteful for 13 seedlings on their second set of leaves, they don't have nearly enough surface area to use all the light.

the temps 80 degf-water every day-i did have a 300w cfl but managed to break it yesterday so had to use my hps early-thanks for the reply-i though hps would be easier!

Oops!

Because sodium light is orange- ish as opposed to bluish this might make them stretch, depends on genetics. They should grow fast though.

Hey man, just get some cheap CFL daylights for the germinating stage. Those high output lights are too intense for the little ones. More water too it sounds like, or maybe putting some vermiculite in the soil.

are the leaves turning yellow? The soil may lack some nitrogen or the potassium level is high. why not add some bat guano and see if it will work?
