lowering the temperature

Dearest Gentlefolk,

I wonder if you would be kind enough to assist me with a grow room problem.
The problem is the temperature; its topping out at 85f+ & I would like to bring the temp down.

Basic room data...
room approximately 3m x 3m
lit by 6 x 600 HID's
1 x 4" fan (air intake)
2 x 6" fans (exhaust)
2 x 16" pedestal fans
strain being grown = blueberry

I am essentially looking for "quiet" solutions; as the grow room is situated in a bedroom within a Victorian mid-terraced property (England).

Any & all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kindly Regards,
valyard

Welcome valyard.....~

You've come to the right place for ideas..

How's the budget??..'Cause we can spend your money for you..just watch us go!

When I had that problem I was forced to install an AC...is that what you were thinking?

Some might suggest changing lights...

How many plants are you growing to be using 6 HID lights?

Also, if you keep an eye out on the web or in classifieds in newspapers, you may be able to find old window AC units. They have inline "squirrel cage" fans in them, and you can buy them cheap this way and just remove the fan for use.

Hello Pharm Girl - thank you for your reply.

AC would do the job but the AC's that I've used in the past have been noisy to say the least! An alternative may very well be an Evaporation Cooler - I have no experience of these - are they quiet? And of course with these there may be an the issue with humidity...

A change of lights? What did you have in mind Pharm Girl?

Greetings SmokeaJoint; thanks for the reply.

The size of the room (taking into account walk space & room for other equipment) will allow 56 plants. The 6 lamps were using, numerically speaking, are a compromise because of heat build up. Again solutions to this unfortunately given the constant need for security, require "quiet" remedies!

Thank you again,
valyard

Well, the inline fans I mentioned above are pretty quiet (IE, you won't be able to hear them outside of the growth space) and they move a large volume of air very quickly. A must have for a grow of any large size.

Anyways, welcome to YaHooka, hope we can help you remedy any and all problems you come across!

I know 85 isn't optimum but I don't think it's dangerous either. I've grown in that temp range without major problems not to say you shouldn't try lowering them. Sometimes things are what they are and you can't do shit about it.

Air cooled hoods would be my bet. If you had 2 banks of three inline 150mm cooltubes, each bank running off a 150mm in line fan capable of shifting about 500 cubic m/h that should sort the cooling for a 3m cubed space.

If the fans have acoustic ducting fitted at either end and are encased in a box filled with expanding foam or packed with blankets or similar the noise should be ok.
If possible fans should be adjusted by transformer type controller to avoid buzzing.

Where could you vent fans to?

Well now Ladies & Gentlemen; thank you all for your contributions - more than enough approaches for me to think on.

Now then Pharm Girl, as to the quietude of monies being spent; trust me I'm sqwaking enough for three!

A last query if I may - Evaporation Coolers; are they effective? I hear that they are quiet (yes I am obssesed with noise - my apologies!)?

Kindly Regards,
valyard

if your worried about sound, with 56 plants you should start lookin for a carbon filter or something for smell too. a/c units arent that loud. i got a free one off craigslist and its an older one, not to much noise. what do your neighbors expect, a church mouse living there? ha

^can the grow room be insulated with styrofoam or insulation to help with the noises??

that would be the first thing i'd do....

Hello Good People; thank you again for your replies...

Vaporedout - carbon filters, yes we have two hooked up to two 6" inline extractor fans - a good job they do too. We are just into our fourth week of vegetative growth (this by the by is our first outing) and they are beginning to give of a distinctive 'musky' odour.

FarmerGiles - the air cooled hoods sound like the ideal solution, unfortunately the money is running out, a harvest or two would be required before the existing HID's could be replaced.

PharmGirl - sound insulation, yes that would be (if you'll forgive the pun...) a sound idea; bloody big job though - a lot of wall surface to cover, and to cover with what material? I've had a look at the price of acoustic dampening tiles on the internet - they aint cheap!

Thanks again & tootle pip!

the cool tubes are a good idea but as stated before rather expensive. 85 degrees isnt tooo bad though , maybe you could just replace one of the lights and that would be enough of a change to lower it ...? either way good luck man

How does the air get into the growspace and where does the exhaust(s) vent to?

Val....if i had to insulate A SPACE AND BE ABLE TO RE-USE THE SPACE LATER FOR OTHER THINGS, I'D USE STYROfoam. For the simple reason that you'd have to frame at every 24 inches...which is a bitch to do.

I came across a slew of free 4 inch thick styrofoam last week. Roofing companies around here have styrofoam for cheap re-sale to the public. Keep your eyes on the dumpsters especially on big construction job-sites....they waste alot!!

Hello FarmerGiles - air intake & venting is hardly the ideal for us; were taking air from downstairs via a tube & expelling from the room simply into the upper landing. As you can imagine, with the temperature dropping (as it currently is in England), condensation is rife - a dehumidifier is now taking care of this.

Hello PharmGirl - styrofoam; hmmmmm! Interesting!

Kindly Regards,
valyard

That's good - I mean that you're intaking from a separate space you're venting.

Well it appears to be working FarmerG. This week-end is decision time as to whether or not to switch over to a 12/12 regime. The girls are standing approximately 18" tall & are a lush, consistant green. The Cevantes books are telling me to look for specific pistill growth (which I'll carefully & comprehensively do today) but as these Ladies are a Blueberry strain, the specifics for these are not covered by Jorge in his tomes - so it'll be a case of an educated guess & a best foot forward!

Regards,
valyard
